About this award

NASA awarded a $16.35M cooperative agreement to the University of Maryland, College Park to establish the ACRES (A Climate Resilient Ecosystem Approach to Strengthening US Agriculture) consortium. Under this effort, which extends through March 31, 2028, the university will lead a transdisciplinary consortium of over 20 private sector partners and leading scientists to develop and deploy user-driven, Earth observation-based products, tools, and applications that support sustainable and resilient agricultural decision-making. The work is organized around four application-oriented themes: evaluating agronomic management for on-farm decision support, annual mapping of U.S. fields and crop yields, supporting national-level agricultural assessment, and addressing soil health and carbon sequestration. The consortium employs a collaborative co-production model that engages farmers, extension agents, policymakers, and industry stakeholders throughout the design and execution of Earth observation projects.

The contract directly responds to the 2018 National Academies Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space and addresses the critical challenge of enabling U.S. agriculture to simultaneously increase production while supporting environmental health, climate resilience, and farmer livelihoods. The ACRES consortium brings together expertise in remote sensing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud computation, agronomy, soil science, economics, and agricultural policy to translate satellite-based measurements and analysis into actionable decision support tools. The work represents NASA's commitment to leveraging Earth observation capabilities to strengthen agricultural sustainability across row crops, tree crops, specialty crops, and rangelands. No set-aside designation was applied to this award.
