About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $80,742.00, was issued by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to Washington State University (WSU). The goal of the project is to develop a software that enables low-temperature extraction of metals and oxygen from regolith (lunar soil) using ionic liquid solvents. The specific aims are to determine the solubility of metal silicates and intermediate chemical species during the digestion process through molecular dynamics simulations. This contract does not involve a set-aside designation. WSU is a public research university that frequently collaborates with government agencies on interdisciplinary research projects, particularly in areas like natural sciences, agricultural sciences, and STEM education. The university also maintains an Indefinite Delivery Contract with the U.S. Geological Survey to provide geochemical laboratory analysis services in support of the agency's Volcano Science Center research.

Description

The goal of the proposed project is to develop a software that enables low-temperature extraction of metals and oxygen from regolith by rapid screening of IL solvent. For this purpose, we will employ proven molecular modeling techniques with data science tools. The specific aims of the proposed project are to:.>aim 1: determine solubility of metal silicates and intermediate chemical species during digestion of regolith with ILS by estimating free energies using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that will be validated by comparing with experimental data.
