About this award

This is a $500,106.00 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Texas at Austin, a non-profit educational institution and state-controlled institution of higher learning. The major research focus of this project is to advance the state of the art of autonomous navigation of manned space vehicles beyond Earth orbit, all the way to the Moon and Mars. This work develops both absolute and relative navigation solutions, which are highly applicable to NASA's future Orion missions planned to take humans to deep space and rendezvous outside of low or mid-Earth orbits. The award does not utilize any set-aside designations. The University of Texas System is the parent organization of the University of Texas at Austin.

Description

The major research focus of the proposed project is to advance the state of the art of autonomous navigation of manned space vehicles beyond earth orbit, all the way to the moon and mars. Autonomous deep space navigation avoids the need for continuous communications with the ground. The work develops absolute as well as relative navigation solutions. Both these research areas find great applicability in NASA s future orion missions, which are planned to take humans to deep space and rendezvous outside of low or mid earth orbits.
