About this award

This is a $5,111,968.00 cooperative agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAER Institute), a non-profit research organization. The award is for a program that has been obtaining high-resolution speckle images of exoplanet host stars for over a decade, supporting exoplanet research for missions like Kepler, K2, and TESS. The effort involves a community-based approach with input from the broader scientific community and public data archiving. The award has no set-aside designation and runs through July 31, 2024. BAER Institute has a robust portfolio of federal contract awards and grants, including several Indefinite Delivery Vehicle (IDV) contracts with the U.S. Geological Survey for global food security and crop analysis work leveraging the institute's machine learning capabilities.

Description

Our ames research group began obtaining high-resolution speckle images of exoplanet host STARS during the kepler mission. Since that time, over a decade ago, we have continued this program, making observations of thousands of exoplanet host STARS for kepler, K2, tess and other exoplanet related STARS. Our effort started as and remains a community program with input target lists coming from the community and reduced data being archived for public use as soon as they are available after each run. Our team has shown that ~50% of exoplanet host STARS are binary (about 12% of these are multiple) which has led to the realization that without knowledge of companion STARS, STARS that LIE well within 1 arcsec and are mostly true bound companions, the exoplanet and stellar parameters determined are incorrect.
