About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $22,580,526.00, was made by the Shared Services Center (SSC) to the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), a nonprofit research organization, to support the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI). The LPI has a long history of collaboration with NASA's Johnson Space Center and plays a key role in advancing the agency's planetary science objectives through cooperation between NASA, universities, and other research entities.

This 5-year cooperative agreement, which does not have a set-aside designation, will leverage USRA's expertise in areas such as program management, scientific research, engineering, and STEM education to further the LPI's activities. USRA also holds Other Transaction Agreements with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for research on quantum optimization methods, demonstrating the organization's broad capabilities in supporting both civilian and defense-related science and technology initiatives across the federal government.

Description

Since its inception more than five decades ago, the LPI has played a unique role in the lunar and planetary science community, providing a means for cooperation among NASA, universities, and other research organizations to advance NASA s objectives in planetary science. The LPI s success is due to the breadth of its activities, the active synergies among them, and crucially, the infusion of science into everything we do. The LPI also has a long history of fruitful collaboration with the astromaterials division at NASA s johnson space center (JSC), facilitated by the close proximity of our two organizations.
