About this award
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $1,000,000.00 cooperative agreement to the Regents of the University of Michigan, Office of Research and Sponsored Projects, doing business as the University of Michigan. The goal of this project is to improve the ability of Hybrid Reynolds-Averaged/Large Eddy Simulation (HRLES) methods to accurately predict properties of complex turbulent flows of aerospace interest. The research will pursue advancements in numerical methods, error-estimation/adaptivity, and data-driven modeling. This work is a collaboration between the University of Michigan, the Boeing Company, and United Technologies Research Center. The award does not have a set-aside designation and is expected to be completed by August 31, 2024.
Description
Accurate modeling and simulation of turbulent flows is critical to several aspects of NASA s aeronautics mission. The goal of the project is to improve the ability of hybrid reynolds-averaged/ large eddy simulation (hrles) methods to robustly, efficiently, and accurately predict properties of complex turbulent flows of aerospace interest. The proposed research pursues this goal through concurrent advances in numerical methods, error-estimation/adaptivity, and data-driven modeling. A high-order discontinuous galerkin framework is formulated to solve the governing equations of hrles. Data-driven techniques are used to improve length scale correlations in rans regions and blending functions in interface regions, and to flag regions of high modeling error. Modeling and numerical errors are distinguished in under-resolved LES regions and h-p adaptive techniques are used to control numerical errors. The combination of these techniques will result in the establishment of best practices for hrles. This project is a collaboration between the university of michigan, the boeing company and united technologies research center. Verification and validation demonstrations will be performed using three-dimensional benchmark problems involving turbulent separation and heat transfer.
