About this award
This is a $262,195.91 cooperative agreement awarded to Oregon State University by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center. The agreement supports the overall mission of maintaining a strong user base that contributes and uses GLOBE Observer land cover data. Key tasks include documenting the data in a scientific publication, testing and improving the data collection protocol and app, providing input for the database API and applications plan, developing training materials, representing GLOBE Observer at conferences, and conducting science-based outreach and messaging to the citizen science community. The agreement does not have a set-aside designation. Oregon State University is the prime contractor, and the parent organization is the Oregon University System, which provides grants and other funding to the university. The agreement aligns with NASA's work in areas like earth science, citizen science, and STEM education.
Description
For the proposed work, the overall mission is to support a strong user base that contributes and uses globe observer land cover data. Specifically, tasks identified with this work are: 1. Document globe observer land cover data in a scientific publication to lay the foundation for future research. 2. Test final release full protocol/APP with users/informal educators/scientists after release. 3. Report usability and recommend changes. Including how to a) support scientist needs for specific observation locations and b) update the comparison land cover dataset as new science data and maps become available. 4. Provide input into database API requirements to support expanded use and publication of the collected land cover data. 5. Provide input to the globe research scientist who will draft an applications plan for globe observer following NASA guidelines. Support implementation of that plan. This will include working with the globe research support scientist to identify how best to support scientists use of land cover data and identifying best training/support mechanisms (webinar, workshop, training documents, etc.) to train scientists and applications users on land cover data. 6. Provide content for the land cover toolkits. 7. Represent globe observer at relevant conferences, workshops, and symposia to increase the data collection, build a strong user base, and share research findings (e.g. forestsat, AGU, citizen science association). 8. Liaise with the science and applications communities to inform citizen scientists of research needs: develop coordinated messaging with other subject matter leads, scientists, and the globe observer communications lead; support citizen scientists. 9. Provide/review science?based globe/globe observer training material to educate partners (as needed). 10. Provide/review science?based communication material to report back to citizen scientists on how science and application community uses data (as needed). 11. Identify, contact, and contribute to database of scientists. 12. Support outreach events and activities as needed, including social media.
