About this award

This federal contract award is a $348,871.57 cooperative agreement issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Montana State University. The purpose is to obtain funding for the Minton Lab to conduct research on the pyrolysis and atomic oxygen reactions of two aerospace materials, CV-1144-0 and RTV-560, using specialized experimental capabilities. The research aims to generate high-fidelity data on the decomposition and oxidation of these ablative materials at flight-relevant conditions. This contract does not have a set-aside designation. As a premier research institution and land-grant university, Montana State University has extensive experience delivering a variety of research, education, and technical services for federal agencies, including past contracts with NASA, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Science Foundation.

Description

The purpose of this request is to obtain funding to use two novel capabilities in the minton lab to obtain important data on the pyrolysis of CV-1144-0 and on the reactions of atomic oxygen with this material in both virgin and charred forms, as well as data on the pyrolysis of RTV-560. The pyrolysis studies will use the new capability to obtain high fidelity data on the decomposition of ablative materials at flight-relevant heating rates, while the atomic oxygen studies will use a one-of-a-kind molecular beam apparatus.
