About this award

This contract award to the University of Maryland, College Park supports the generation of long-term, accurate surface reflectance products from various satellite sensors, including AVHRR, Landsat, MODIS, VIIRS, and Sentinel 2. The research will also develop a long-term albedo product and analyze changes in vegetation phenology and its relationship with air temperatures over the United States and Canada since the 1980s.

The $482,217 cooperative agreement was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center and has a completion date of March 11, 2022. The University of Maryland, College Park is the prime contractor, and it is not a set-aside award. As a state-controlled institution of higher learning, the university has extensive experience conducting research and providing technical services to federal agencies, including NASA, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Transportation, through both contract and grant mechanisms.

Description

This proposal will support the generation of long term, accurate surface reflectance (SR) products from a several sensors (avhrr, landsat, modis, viirs and sentinal 2) that can be used for a variety of products downstream. The proposed research will also develop a long term albedo product and will analyze its change over USA and canada from the 1980 s till present. The surface reflectance record will also be used to study long term change in vegetation phenology and its relationship with average air temperatures. The PI has great credentials for the proposed research having been involved in the development of the modis SR algorithms, and SR for other instruments including past and current avhrr and landsat missions.
