About this award

This is a cooperative agreement between NASA and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to enable Caltech's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) to continue operating and advancing the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) and the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). IPAC has been carrying out this work for over 20 years and is well-positioned to continue. The $22,661,209.03 agreement will support a technology initiative to enhance data curation, mining, access, and distribution for these NASA-sponsored databases. This is not a set-aside contract. As a leading private research university, Caltech has a long history of providing a wide range of scientific, engineering, and technical services to NASA and other federal agencies through both prime and subcontract awards.

Description

We propose to establish a cooperative agreement between NASA and caltech to enable caltech/ipac to continue operating and advancing the NASA/ipac extragalactic database (NED) and the NASA/ipac infrared science archive (irsa). Ipac has been carrying out this implementation for about 28 years for NED and 25 years for irsa, and is therefore well placed to continue this effort under the cooperative agreement vehicle. Moreover, this vehicle results in efficiency gains that will allow ipac to develop a technology initiative to enable NED and irsa to keep up with the fast-moving innovations in the areas of data curation, data mining, and data access and distribution.
