About this award
This is a $375,814.50 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to LMA Technologies, LLC (doing business as LMA TECH) for the provision of specialized lightning mapping and monitoring equipment and services. The contract supports NASA and NOAA programs focused on lightning studies, leveraging LMA TECH's expertise in lightning mapping array (LMA) and lightning interferometer (INTF) technologies. These systems provide advanced 2D and 3D observations of lightning structure and development within thunderstorms, which can serve as a proxy for data collected by the Global Lightning Mapper (GLM) on the upcoming GOES-R satellite. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.
Description
Applying its unique expertise and experience as the developers of both the widely used lightning mapping array (LMA) and a new, innovative broadband very high frequency (VHF) lightning interferometer (intf), LMA technologies LLC will provide support of NASA and NOAA programs concerned with lightning studies. Both of these lightning observing systems provide state-of-the-art 2-d and 3-d observations of the structure and temporal development of complete lightning flashes inside thunderstorms. The observations can be used as a proxy for lightning discharges to be detected optically by the global lightning mapper (GLM) on board the upcoming goes-r satellite. The intf measurements in particular are obtained with microsecond to sub-microsecond time resolution, and include similar high time-resolution sferics observations indicative of optically bright current events.
