About this award

This is a cooperative agreement between the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to conduct mission-specific research in planetary science. The $260,488 agreement will fund Dr. Timothy McConnochie, a UMD employee at GSFC, to work with Dr. Michael Smith on constructing radiative transfer models to predict and analyze observations of the Martian atmosphere from current and future remote sensing platforms. This supports ongoing NASA Mars missions. The agreement does not have a set-aside designation. As a state-controlled institution of higher learning, UMD has received numerous federal contract awards and grants to provide research, engineering, and other services across agencies like the Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, and NASA.

Description

The department of astronomy at the university of maryland has established multiple cooperative agreements with the goddard space flight center (gsfc) to conduct mission specific research in the planetary sciences. This particular agreement will continue to facilitate uninterrupted study of the aerosols, gases, temperatures, and atmospheric dynamics of the atmosphere of mars in support of multiple NASA mars missions. This agreement would directly fund DR. Timothy mcconnochie, a UMD employee working at gsfc with DR michael smith, who is very knowledgeable in radiative transfer and instrument capabilities and limitations and will construct radiative transfer models to predict and fit observations of the martian atmosphere acquired by current and future mars remote sensing platforms.
