The National Science Foundation (NSF) is seeking applicants for the Environmental Sustainability program, which is part of the Environmental Engineering and Sustainability cluster. The program aims to promote sustainable engineered systems that support human well-being while also being compatible with sustaining natural environments. Research efforts should consider long time horizons and may incorporate contributions from social sciences and ethics. The program supports engineering research in four principal areas: industrial ecology, green engineering, ecological engineering, and earth systems engineering. Proposals should address the novelty or potentially transformative nature of the proposed work and its importance in terms of engineering science and potential impact on society or industry. Typical single-investigator award budgets include support for one graduate student (or equivalent) and up to one month of PI time per year, with award durations generally up to three years. Larger budgets should be discussed with the program director prior to submission. Proposals for Conferences, Workshops, and Supplements, as well as RAPID, EAGER, and GOALI proposals, are also considered when appropriate and should be discussed with the program director before submission.
