About this opportunity

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Glenn Research Center is soliciting proposals for a versatile Vacuum Induction Melting system capable of melting and tilt pouring into molds up to 3.5 feet high, with dual furnace capability optimized for 50 kg and 5 kg heats of various alloys. Evaluation will be based on price, with award as a bi-lateral purchase order to the responsible offeror providing the most advantageous solution. Questions are due by May 20, 2020 and proposals are due June 5, 2020.

There is no set-aside. The NAICS code is 333994 for industrial process furnace and oven manufacturing with a size standard of 500 employees. The system must be located at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Key details include the dual furnace capability with one furnace rated for 50 kg heats using a 100kW power supply at 1kHz and the other for 5 kg heats using a 50kW power supply at 10kHz to melt iron, cobalt, and nickel-based alloys under vacuum or inert gas.

Notice text

NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) is interested in purchasing a versatile Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) system for alloy processing and development purposes.  The system should be capable of melting, with tilt pour capability for casting into molds (at least 3.5 ft. high), with dual furnace capability.  One furnace will be optimized to handle 50 kg. heats and one furnace sized to handle 5 kg. heats of typical Fe-, Co- and Ni-based alloys and other related metallic materials under vacuum or an environment of inert gas.  Each furnace will be mounted to its own door and will include an independent power pass through, furnace cradle and tilt mechanism and will be connected to its own dedicated power supply.
