Update #8 ·

Added: May 21, 2018 1:00 pm Question: There are the 40 blocks. We own 3) of the forms that are the correct size for the required block size. 3 blocks a day is a couple of weeks of making blocks, 3.5 yard pours. How many tests will be required? If concrete testing is done for the blocks and the same mix design is used for the slab on grade, will additional testing be required? Cascade in Hoonah doesn't have an ACI certified tech on staff or lab and would have to coordinate with PDC in Juneau.

Answer:
Spec 03300-1.04 says testing is in accordance with ACI 301 Section 1.6.4.

ACI 301 Section 1.6.4 says to test every 100 cy, or minimum once per day. That would mean testing every single day, which is ok for slump and air entrainment but seems excessive for the strength tests.

Testing requirements (if the concrete mix design has not been successfully tested within the past 24 months).
Air-Entrainment and Slump - once per day Cylinders - one set of three cylinders on the first day. If the cylinder test on the seventh day does not meet specifications, then another set of three cylinders. Both sets of cylinders are tested at 7 days and 28 days.

03300 Section 1.03 requires the concrete blocks to be supplied by a commercial ready-mix firm.

The concrete mix design will be submitted to the CO for review.

There is no concrete slab on this design. There is a concrete leveling pad, which can be the same mix design as the blocks. One set of tests for the concrete leveling pad (cylinders, slump, and air).
