About this opportunity
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center (NASA/NSSC) has posted a Special Notice regarding SHREC Membership, a sole source procurement opportunity. This notice was published on January 15, 2026, and indicates NASA's intent to contract with the University of Pittsburgh for membership services under FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i). The procurement falls under NAICS Code 611310 (Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools) and will be managed by NASA/NSSC with performance located at NASA Johnson Space Center. The notice invites interested organizations to submit written statements of capability and qualification to demonstrate whether the procurement should be conducted competitively, with the government retaining final discretion over the decision. All submissions must be received by the primary point of contact, Cara Craft, no later than 1 p.m. Central Standard Time on January 20, 2026.
The SHREC Membership provides NASA Johnson Space Center with a one-year research partnership (January 1 – December 31, 2026) focused on mission-critical computing research through an equivalent of one graduate student researcher. The membership enables access to research capabilities across high-performance computing, resilient computing, and space computing conducted at multiple universities including University of Pittsburgh, Brigham Young University, University of Florida, and Virginia Tech. Research topics will address high-speed mission-critical computing capabilities, fault injection and mitigation strategies, redundancy mechanisms, software fault tolerance, and advanced space architectures utilizing both commercial and radiation-hardened technologies. Interested contractors must submit their capabilities statement in writing only, as oral communications are not acceptable, and must meet the deadline of January 20, 2026. The evaluation process will assess whether additional competitive procurement is warranted, with the NASA Ombudsman clause (1852.215-84) applicable to this acquisition.
