QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Question 1: Can we can use a substitute refrigerant other than Ammonia?
Answer: The Government specified ammonia in the interests of complying with DOD objectives of environmentally friendly facilities. If it is not possible to use ammonia to meet the required performance specifications, the vendor may propose equipment with a different refrigerant, however, the greenhouse gas/global warming factor of the alternate refrigerant should be selected to be as low as possible.
Question 2: The spec call for a set point range of -10F to 35F. Please advise if a system design that can get to
0F but not below is acceptable.
Answer: -10F is binding.
Question 3: The specs call for 3 tons @ 35°F fluid Supply to 1.5 Tons @ -10°F Fluid supply. The smallest we can do is 20.5 tons @ 35°F fluid supply / 7.5 tons @ -10°F Fluid Supply. I do not think there is a low GWP refrigerant that will satisfy both the high and low end temperatures in conjunction with an air cooled condenser specified for 100°F Ambient. I also think CO2 would not work due to the operating temperature range. The high end is in the trans-critical range and the low end is in the sub-critical range. Please advise.
Answer: It’s not necessary for the performance rating to be obtained with only a single compressor and refrigerant loop. If it is necessary to supply two compressors (one of the rated 3 tons at 35F and one of the rated 1.5 tons at -10F) which can cool the glycol across the range of temperatures, the vendor should quote a system with two refrigeration loops.
