About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a Rotary Microtome for Vegetable Improvement Research. The SOW outlines the technical requirements for the microtome, including automated motorized sectioning, section thickness range, specimen clamp, blade carrier, and electrical requirements. The deliverable is to be provided to the USDA-ARS Vegetable Crops Research Unit in Madison, Wisconsin by September 30, 2024, with installation and on-site training required.

The related federal contract opportunity is a Request for Quote (RFQ) for the same Rotary Microtome. The solicitation is a total small business set-aside with an NAICS code of 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing). The government is seeking the lowest price technically acceptable offer, and quotes are due by 2:00 PM Eastern Time on August 1, 2024. The contract is anticipated to be a firm-fixed-price award, with delivery required within 60 days of award.

Statement of Work (SOW) Project: Rotary Microtome for Vegetable Improvement Research

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work:

Provide a rotary microtome for the Vegetable Crops Research Unit at ARS-Madison to enhance vegetable genetic and breeding research.

2.0 Background:

A rotary microtome is a specialized cutting tool used to precisely cut extremely thin slices of paraffin-embedded tissue samples. The slices are so thin that it is not possible to cut them manually. Plant tissues are fixed in a solid material and then a microtome is used to make thin slices. These thin slices are placed under a microscope to investigate cellular structure. An automated microtome allows high throughput processing of a large quantity of samples without the need for repetitive motions that can cause strain.

The Vegetable Crops Research Unit (VCRU) at USDA-ARS Madison location hosts several research scientists working on genetic improvement of various horticultural crops. Cellular structure is a research interest to all scientists at VCRU due to its relationship with texture, which is an important factor in consumer preference for vegetable consumption. We require an instrument to facilitate our genetic, genomic, and molecular breeding research that will be accessible for all labs in VCRU (and USDA-ARS labs at Madison, WI location).
