About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for a paper spray ionization attachment for a mass spectrometer. The attachment must hold paper strips in a cartridge for reproducible orientation, apply voltages up to 3,000 volts to the paper in a safe manner, and be compatible with and controllable by a BaySpec Portability mass spectrometer. Key deliverables include delivery and installation of the attachment within 60 days of order. The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the USDA Agricultural Research Service seeking this paper spray ionization attachment, as identified by solicitation number 12505B23Q0331.

STATEMENT OF WORK
PaperSpray Ionization Attachment
(PRODUCT)
GENERAL INFORMATION.
1.0 SCOPE OF WORK.
Vendor is to deliver a new PaperSpray Ionization attachment compatible with a BaySpec Portability(TM) mass spectrometer.
Features, Components, Accessories, Modules, Software and/or Services to be included:
(1) Include a reusable sample cartridge to hold porous paper substrates
(2) Include a means to apply voltages up to 3,000 volts to the sample cartridge (in #1) using power supplied through a BaySpec model Portability mass spectrometer
(3) Be capable of applying both positive and negative voltages to the sample cartridge
(4) Include software that permits control of the attachment by a BaySpec model Portability mass spectrometer
(5) Be physically compatible with attachment to a BaySpec model Portability mass spectrometer weigh less than 10 lb
2.0 BACKGROUND.
Mass spectrometers are used to collect information about the size of chemical components in a sample and how much of each component is present. Samples may be introduced to mass spectrometers by various means. Our need is for an attachment that holds samples of paper in front of the inlet for the mass spectrometer. A high voltage must be able to be applied to the paper in a manner that does not endager the operator. In the presence of high voltage, liquid that is applied to the paper forms very small droplets that are sprayed into the mass spectrometer.
Because sample orientation is critical, the paper strips must be housed in a cartridge to permit reproducible orientation. The mass spectrometer to which the unit will be attached is a BaySpec, Inc. model Portability(TM). Therefore the attachment must be compatible electronically, physically, and be controllable by the indicated mass spectrometer. Because the need is for a portable device, it is essential that the attachment not add undue weight or size to the existing (portable) instrument.
CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS.
3.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS/TASKS.
Technical Specifications:
1) Instrument must be capable of applying voltages up to 3,000 to paper strips in a manner safe for the operator (for example, have a protective housing)
2) Instrument must be capable of being switched between positive and negative voltages
3) Instrument must have a cartridge system within which paper strips can be attached to the power supply in a reproducible orientation
4) Instrument must be compatible with physical attachment to BaySpec model
Portability mass spectrometer
5) Instrument must be controllable by the same software that controls the BaySpec Portability mass spectrometer
6) Instrument must be powered through the BaySpec Portability mass spectrometer
