Statement of Work

Project: A Nitrous Oxide Trace Gas Analyzer and a Carbon Dioxide Gas Analyzer with Compatible Smart Chamber

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: Paired trace gas analyzers, compatible Smart Chamber (survey chamber), and necessary accessories (two analyzer T-split tubing, cable assembly, ten soil collars, backpack) are required for synchronous measurement of soil nitrous oxide (N2O) and soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using recirculating closed and automated chamber systems. Smart chamber system connects with mobile device or laptop via the built-in Wi-Fi web server to see live flux data with trace gas analyzer.

The chamber will log GPS and ancillary data for flux measurements. Smart chamber survey system is completely self-powered by long-lasting batteries and is readily portable.

2.0 Background: Paired analyzers are sought to support synchronized soil N2O and soil CO2 gas flux research at the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment in Ames, Iowa. This institute currently lacks the capability to simultaneously measure N2O and CO2 fluxes, yet such capability would elucidate perceived interactions between nitrogen and carbon fluxes in Midwestern cropping systems. A smart chamber is necessary to ease and speed survey measurements for N2O and CO2 with the analyzers and is deemed necessary, especially, for in-situ field monitoring of these gases. Analyzers integrated with the smart chamber will fill a need for increased accuracy, repeatability, and speed of measurement and improved temporal resolution of N2O and CO2 flux measurements.
