Statement of Requirement
Project: Evaluation of immunogenicity of different vaccine formulations against Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in cattle
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work: Cattle are the primary reservoir for STEC bacteria, including
(Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli) STEC O157:H7 (O157). O157-colonized cattle remain healthy but are prone to shed these bacteria in their feces, which pose major risks to the contamination of bovine food products. Most human disease outbreaks and/or sporadic cases of infection, therefore, are linked to the consumption of ground meat, milk, contaminated water, and ready-to-eat vegetables. Animal vaccination is one potential method to limit O157 in The goal is to evaluate different vaccine in inducing O157 specific immune responses in cattle that are near slaughter age. As gender can impact immune responses, we typically perform vaccine trials in same sex animals with all animals of the same breed.
2.0 Background: This project requires healthy heifers of approximately 13-17 months of age. All animals need to be of the same breed or breed mix and within 3 months of age to on another. Dairy breed and or mix breed with a dairy breed is preferable for comparisons to other trials. Heifers must be dewormed, free of ring worm, BVDV-free and sound of foot and body. Cattle must be transported to Ames with no other animals. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection required on all animals.
Cattle must arrive by 8/17/2021.
