About this file

This document outlines specifications for a research plot seed counter procurement. Key requirements include a machine that can rapidly count individual corn seed samples into envelopes for planting research plots at a rate of 10,000 to 20,000 samples per year. The seed counter must scan barcodes on seed sources and envelopes to verify correct seed identity and counts. It must operate quietly and occupy minimal lab space. Technical requirements specify features such as rapid seed discharge, a clearly defined seed loading chamber, barcode scanning capability compatible with multiple barcode types, a carousel to allow counting multiple packets per seed source, self-contained operation without external devices, compatibility with 30" x 36" workstation space, and a one-year warranty. The related federal contract opportunity is solicited by the USDA Agricultural Research Service Midwest Area to procure one barcode-enabled seed counter meeting these specifications, with unit delivery required within 90 days of award.

Specifications Project: Research plot seed counter

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: Require seed counting machine to accurately count corn seeds into envelopes for planting research plots.

2.0 Background: Counting machine must enable rapid counting of a large number of individual samples (10 to 20 thousand per year) into envelopes for planting research plots. Machine must scan a bar code on each envelope to determine correct envelope is being filled with correct seed and to determine number of seeds to count into envelope. Machine must operate at a minimal noise level and occupy lab space of 36” square or less.

CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS

3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks:

1. Rapid discharge of remnant seed requiring minimal effort on the part of the operator after counting without need for machine disassembly.

2. Clearly defined seed loading chamber for ease of loading adequate source seed without overloading and or spilling of seed.

3. Quiet operation. Most seed counters are vibration, bowl-based technology which generates noise level high enough to advise hearing protection. Seed counter not based on vibration technology preferred to reduce worker noise exposure.

4. Barcode scanning capability to verify correct seed identity and seed counts by scanning both seed source and seed destination envelopes. Scanning system that is a camera based, smart barcode reader compatible with multiple bar code types (Aztec, Data Matrix, and QR) and able to learn new systems. Advanced barcode system must meet our current standard and can adapt to future changes.

5. Carousel to allow counting multiple packets for same seed source. Reduces repetitive motion pattern for operator and reduces potential for errors. Carousel unit to allow each packet to be barcode scanned and capable of 1 to 10+ packets per entry.

6. Self-contained unit that does not require link to laptop or pad computer to operate with full functionality.

7. Space need for unit must be compatible with current seed lab workstations. Seed counting workstations allow for 30” x 36” work bench area for seed counter.

8. Access to proven service of unit after purchase. Seed counters being replaced can no longer be serviced.

9. Data port (USB preferred) for data records of seed counted

10. Foot operated switch to start/stop counting operation.

11. Qty: 1 unit.

12. Minimum One year warranty

13. Must include Initial on-site equipment training

4.0 Deliverables/Schedule: Unit shall be delivered onsite within 90 days of date of award

5.0 Technical Point of Contact: TBD

6.0 Place of Delivery: Agronomy Hall, 716 Farmhouse Ln, Ames, IA 50011-1051.
