About this file

This statement of work outlines technical requirements for a universal testing machine. The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Midwest Area seeks delivery of a universal testing machine capable of withstanding 20 kilonewtons of force and handling load cells from 50 newtons to 10 kilonewtons. The machine must include a computer system and software compatible with the agency's existing Bluehill software and Instron fixtures. It should allow for cyclic testing, compression testing, and three-point bend testing. Installation and training are required at the agency's facility in Peoria, Illinois within eight weeks of award. The related solicitation is for the purchase of this universal testing machine to replace an aging unit and support ongoing research at the agency.

Text1: Universal testing machine (UTM)
Text2: Vendor is to deliver a universal testing machine (UTM) for solid samples having a frame that can withstand 20 kilonewtons of force and with the capability to handle load cells ranging from 50 newtons to 10 kilonewtons.
Text13: We currently have a universal testing machine that needs to be replaced because it is approximately 20 years old nearing the End of (useful) Life (EOL) with circuit boards that are irreplaceable due to their age. This has led to downtime with essential CRIS research. An updated UTM with software that is compatible with our past data on Bluehill software is essential for continuation of CRIS research. My CRIS research revolves around using biochar as a substitute for carbon black filler in rubber composites, and the universal testing machine is essential in providing mechanical properties of the composite samples we create and study to achieve our research goals. It is necessary that equipment is from the same manufacturer as current equipment. Our current operator has extensive experience in the use and maintenance of Instron equipment and software. Besides myself, Dr. Gordon Selling and Dr. Atanu Biswas, both of Plant Polymer Research, and Dr. Kevin Liu, of Bio-oils Research, also utilize the universal testing machine in the study of various thin films that they create.
