Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: SRI Dual-Channel Pulse Amplifier

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Superconductive Electronics Group (672.04)

General Statement of Need:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), along with the Superconductive Electronics Group (672.04) provides Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizer (JAWS) systems as a standard reference instrument (SRI). As part of disseminating an SRI JAWS system, we require one (1) dual-channel pulse amplifier. This amplifier will be used to provide high gain (>25 dB), high-power (>22 dBm P1dB and >7 Vpp output), and large bandwidth (>45 GHz) amplification of two high frequency pulse biases (>15 gigapulses per second) for driving Josephson junction arrays. We propose to purchase an instrument that is identical to that used in prototype SRI JAWS systems at NIST; items from other manufacturers cannot be used without requiring both hardware and software modification, and these modifications would create significant additional costs to the government, and potentially harm programmatic requirements if unanticipated functional changes in performance occur due to the hardware and software modifications. We request a purchase of one (1) dual-channel pulse amplifier to fulfill current commitments.

Items and Ancillary Services:

Item 1: Dual-Channel Rack-Mounted Pulse Amplifier

Quantity: 1 EA

Specifications: 1.1 High gain: >25 dB

1.2 High-power: >22 dBm P1dB and >7 Vpp output

1.3 Large bandwidth: >45 GHz

1.4 Two independent amplification channels

Technical Requirements:Pulse Amplifier shall comply with the following electrical specifications:

1. The amplifier shall have at least 2 independent channels

2. Each amplifier channel will have K-connectors (or 2.92 mm connectors) on both the input and output; the input and output impedances will be 50 ohms.

3. Each amplifier channel shall be able to supply at least 7 Vpp into 50 ohms and have a 1dB saturation point (P1dB) >22 dBm.

4. Each amplifier channel must be able to have a gain > 25 dB.

5. Each amplifier channel shall have a bandwidth from <200 MHz to >45 GHz.

6. The amplifier will be powered using a single standard IEC320

C14 male inlet which is integrated into the unit and standard US wall power (120 V, 60 Hz).

Digitizer shall comply with the following documentation specifications:

7. All manuals shall be provided electronically Digitizer shall comply with the following mechanical specifications:

8. The amplifier shall be rack-mountable and ≤ 2U in height Isolation Amplifier shall comply with the following warranty specifications:

9. The amplifier shall have a 1-year warranty The System shall be compatible with existing NIST SRI software/hardware.

Commercial Product Requirements

1. The isolation amplifier must be an established commercial product with at least one unit operating successfully in the field. Experimental or prototype items are not acceptable.

2. The isolation amplifier shall be a new (not refurbished or reconditioned) item covered by the original manufacturer’s full warranty. The use of “gray market” components not authorized for sale in the U.S. by the proposer is not acceptable.
