About this file

This specification document outlines requirements for the purchase of four thermal mass flow controllers and a control unit by the USDA Agricultural Research Service. The agency requires four mass flow controllers calibrated for nitrogen, hydrogen, air and carbon dioxide capable of flows between 10-500 standard cubic centimeters per minute at inlet pressures up to 1,500 pounds per square inch. Wetted components must be compatible with calibration gases and possible process gases including inerts and light hydrocarbons. Additionally, the controllers must achieve minimum flows up to 450 standard cubic centimeters per minute at varied inlet pressures while maintaining a 50 pound per square inch pressure drop. The related federal contract opportunity posted by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Midwest Area seeks these thermal mass flow controllers and a four-channel control unit with 120 volt power and cables no less than 10 feet in length to interface with the controllers. Delivery of the equipment is required no later than 120 calendar days after contract award to the specified address.

SPECIFICATION DOCUMENT

Project Purchase of Four Thermal Mass Flow Controllers and Control Unit

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

Vendor is to deliver a set of four new thermal mass flow controllers and the necessary control unit as identified in this solicitation.

2.0 Background

Mass Flow Controllers (MFC) automatically control the flow rate of a gas without being affected by changes in gas pressure. The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Peoria, Illinois has a need for four MFC to accurately and reproducibly control the flow of different gases used in high-pressure flow reactors.

Contractor Requirements

3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks

Mass Flow Controllers (MFC)

1. Total of four thermal mass flow controllers with a maximum inlet pressure of at least 1,500 psi and sized/calibrated to each of the following gases for a given operating pressure and flow range:

a. one each for nitrogen (N2),

b. one for hydrogen (H2),

c. one for air, and

d. one for carbon dioxide (CO2).

2. Wetted components compatible with calibration gases and other possible gases including inerts (He and Ar) and light hydrocarbons (e.g., ethylene, propylene, butenes)

3. All four sized to achieve 10-500 ccm of gas flow at an inlet pressure of 450 psi and an outlet pressure of 400 psi.

4. Capable of achieving at least 450 ccm of gas flow at inlet pressures of 200 and 1000 psi when a pressure drop of 50 psi is maintained across the MFC.

5. ¼” Compression fitting for connecting to stainless steel reactor tubing.

6. Normally closed valve

7. Full scale flow range (N2 equivalent) of 5 sccm and at least 30 slpm with factory resizing of internal components.

8. Accuracy of at least 1% of set point value.

9. Reproducibility of at least 0.5% of set point value.

10. Response time of less than 2 seconds.

11. Designed for mounting in a horizontal flow direction with threaded holes on bottom of controller.

12. Capable of operating at a temperature between 4-50 oC.

13. Size limit for each controller: 3” wide X 10” tall X 6 “ deep.

Control Unit

1. 4 channel control unit capable of simultaneously interfacing, powering, and controlling all four

MFC.

2. 120 VAC power requirement

3. Four, 10 feet cables (minimum length) for connecting MFCs to control unit
