STATEMENT OF NEED
Monitoring the Earth’s magnetic field via ground-based observatories is a core responsibility of the USGS Geomagnetism Program. The data acquired at the Program’s observatories are utilized to monitor, map, and evaluate geoelectric hazards that can interfere with the operation of the Nation’s electric power grids. The USGS Geomagnetism Program has a need for expanding its magnetic observatory network and requires the purchase of a Trimble mechanical total station and accessories to accurately locate the Program’s observatory magnetometers and variometers to provide the highest quality data to its stakeholders and the public.
The USGS Geomagnetism Program is required to provide near-real time, ground-based magnetic data in support of national priorities established by the National Space Weather Strategy and Action Plan and Executive Order 13865. If the Geomagnetism Program cannot purchase the requested equipment, it will not be possible to provide the most accurate data possible, which could negatively impact the data users such as NOAA, the U.S. Air Force, and others who rely on the USGS magnetometer data for their missions.
Therefore, purchase of the Trimble mechanical total station and accessories is required for the Program to uphold its mission.
