3. Description of Supplies or Services.

The USGS Geomagnetism Program is currently expanding its magnetic observatory network and requires the procurement of the equipment listed above. Trimble total stations are currently in use by the USGS Geomagnetism Program, and it is essential that the Program utilize the same brand equipment to ensure compatibility with the existing equipment.

4. Estimated Dollar Value.

5. Statutory Authority. The proposed action may be awarded on a brand name basis under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i).

6. Rationale Supporting Use of Citation in No. 5.

The Trimble R12i has an acceptable past performance record with the USGS GHSC. This specific equipment provides the accurate data to be shared with NOAA, the U.S. Air Force, and other agencies that rely on the USGS magnetometer data for their missions. It is required that the Trimble R12i GNSS receiver be purchased to ensure compatibility with Trimble components already in use by the USGS Geomagnetism Program.

The Trimble R12i features ProPoint GNSS technology that provides required performance in degraded GNSS conditions and leverages the latest developments in GNSS signals. The R12i also provides Real-time Kinetic (RTK) level precision without the need for a base station which offers tilt compensation for accurately laying out and measuring points without precise pole leveling.

No other total stations are known to be compatible with Trimble brand products that can properly interface with existing investment in inventory or meet the data continuity needs of the Government.
