About this file
This is a Statement of Work for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) geomagnetic data assimilation support services. The contractor shall use an open-source geodynamo model to generate initial ensemble solutions for GSFC's Geomagnetic Ensemble Modeling System (GEMS), which is used for geomagnetic secular variation forecasting. The work supports research into model biases and data assimilation schemes by providing solutions from an independent dynamo model utilizing different physical and mathematical approximations compared to GSFC's in-house MoSST model.
The contractor must perform free-running dynamo simulations using numerical truncations and parameters equivalent to MoSST settings, then select 1,028 numerical solutions meeting specific criteria: time intervals between ensemble members must be at least 0.5% of the magnetic free-decay time or longer, and the magnitude of the poloidal magnetic field at the mean surface must fall within 3-sigma of the mean value for the ensemble size of 1,028. Deliverables include the 1,028 dynamo solutions meeting specified requirements, Fortran subroutines for reading the solutions, and comprehensive documentation describing simulation configurations, data formats, and ensemble statistics. The performance period is six months from fund receipt, with NASA/GSFC Technical POC providing project oversight.

Statement of Work
1. Purpose
This Statement of Work (SoW) describes the details of the work to support of NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center (GSFC) geomagnetic data assimilation projects. The purpose of this work is to generate free-running numerical dynamo simulation solutions with an independent dynamo model which are different from that used in GSFC. The results will be used to construct geodynamo solution ensembles to be used in GSFC
Geomagnetic Ensemble Modeling System (GEMS) for research purposes. The performance period of this work is within six months from the date the fund is received.
2. Background
The geodynamo modeling group at GSFC has been developing new data assimilation schemes for GEMS, a system used to make geomagnetic secular variation forecast by utilizing their in-house geodynamo model
(MoSST) and geomagnetic observations. The forecast accuracies, measured by the standard Observation minus Forecast (OmF), will be used to test the sperformance of the new scheme. One effort is to examine
(geodynamo) model biases on OmF. These biases can arise from geodynamo parameter values (a set of non-dimensional parameters used to define the background state) used in the same model, or from physical and mathematical approximations implemented in (independent) numerical geodynamo models.
Assessments of the model biases depends on generation of appropriate initial ensembles for GEMS based on free-running dynamo solutions. This work will provide solutions from independent geodynamo models that utilizes different physical and mathematical approximations (compared to those in MoSST).
3. Scope of Work
The contractor shall use an open-source geodynamo model to generate the initial ensembles for GEMS.
Specific tasks include:
1. Use the model to perform free-running dynamo simulations with the numerical truncations and dynamo parameters that are equivalent to those used in the MoSST simulation settings.
2. Select numerical solutions over the entire simulation period with the following conditions: (a) the numerical time intervals between any two ensemble members shall be 0.5% of the magnetic free-decay time or longer; (b) the magnitude of the poloidal magnetic field at the mean surface shall be within 3-sigma of the mean value for the ensemble size of 1028.
4. Deliverables
The final deliverables of this service include
• 1028 numerical dynamo solutions that meet the requirement specified in Section 3,
• Fortran subroutines for reading the dynamo solutions,
• Documentation describing simulation configurations, data formats, ensemble mean and STD.
The NASA/GSFC Technical POC will provide project oversight to ensure that the contractor will meet the specifications as described in this document.
