Statement of Work Summary

This Statement of Work (SOW) dated January 14, 2026, describes NASA's contract for continued development of advanced coating systems for lunar spacesuit outer shell fabrics under the Artemis Suit Materials Project. The Contractor shall collaborate with NASA to optimize coating and lamination finishing processes applied to custom-woven Vectran-based fabrics, addressing specific performance requirements including fabric hand, flame resistance, electrostatic discharge (ESD) performance, interlaminar peel strength, and abrasion resistance. The Period of Performance is eight months following Approved to Proceed (ATP), with five key milestones: M1 Kickoff (ATP + 2 weeks), M2 Initial Optimization (ATP + 1 month), M3 Interim Samples (ATP + 3 months), M4 Scale-Up Assessment (ATP + 6 months), and M5 Final Delivery (ATP + 8 months).

The contract is structured on a Firm Fixed Price (FFP) basis with deliverables including kickoff presentation and finalized schedule, updated test plan and test matrix, interim coated fabric samples for ESD/optical/flame testing, scale-up and industrialization assessment report, and five linear yards of final optimized coated Vectran-based fabric. Primary technical objectives include maximizing interlaminar peel strength to mitigate cryogenic delamination risk, producing dust-impermeable outer coatings with minimal dust adhesion, incorporating inorganic additives for enhanced flame resistance and UV durability, maintaining low stiffness across temperature ranges, and conducting scaling and industrialization assessments. The Contractor shall perform services using commercially reasonable best efforts and provide representative fabric specimens to support downstream NASA validation testing.

STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)

January 14, 2026

Advanced Suit Materials (ASM) Custom Textile Development

Textile Vendor SOW

1. Background

The overarching goal of NASA’s Artemis Suit Materials Project, conducted by the Crew and

Thermal Systems Division Advanced Suit Team, is to develop enabling technologies and, where feasible, a turnkey solution for suit vendors supporting the outer shell fabric of a lunar spacesuit Environmental Protection Garment (EPG). The project asserts that no existing commercial fabric system fully satisfies the combined performance requirements for the lunar environment, thereby necessitating the development of a bespoke fabric solution.

One of the most challenging aspects of this effort is the development and optimization of fabric coating and lamination systems that meet stringent requirements for dust penetration resistance, optical performance, ultraviolet (UV) durability, and thermal stability across ambient and cryogenic temperature regimes.

2. Scope of Work

The Contractor shall collaborate with NASA to continue the development of an advanced coating system applied to custom-woven fabrics intended for use in lunar spacesuit applications. This effort includes optimization of the finishing processes, including but not limited to calendaring and the application of a high-performance coating and/or film laminate.

The Contractor’s scope of work shall specifically address requirements related to fabric hand, flame resistance, electrostatic discharge (ESD) performance, interlaminar peel strength, and abrasion resistance. All work shall be performed in close coordination with

NASA to ensure alignment with project objectives and lessons learned from prior development phases.

3. Period of Performance

The Period of Performance (POP) for this effort shall be eight (8) months following

Approved to Proceed (ATP). All milestones shall be scheduled relative to ATP.

4. Milestones and Deliverables Schedule

Milestone Timing Description Deliverables

5. Technical Goals and Objectives

The Contractor shall pursue overall coating optimization based on prior test data and development experience. Specific technical goals include:

• Maximizing interlaminar peel strength to mitigate the risk of delamination during cryogenic flex cycling.

• Producing an outer coating layer that is impermeable to lunar dust and minimizes dust adhesion.

• Incorporating inorganic additives to enhance flame resistance, UV durability, color stability, and ESD performance.

• Maintaining the lowest achievable stiffness at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures.

• Refining the coating/film formulation based on lessons learned from previous testing and development activities.

• Conducting a scaling and industrialization assessment of the proposed coating/laminate system.

• Providing representative fabric specimens to NASA in support of downstream fabric validation testing.

6. Deliverables

The Contractor shall provide the following deliverables:

• Project kickoff meeting and monthly technical status updates.

• Updated test plan and test matrix.

• Scale-up and manufacturability assessment.

• Interim coated fabric samples for NASA testing.

• Five (5) linear yards of the final optimized coated fabric solution.

7. Contract Type

The services described in this Statement of Work shall be provided on a Firm Fixed Price

(FFP) basis. The Contractor shall perform the services using commercially reasonable best efforts and in accordance with the terms and conditions of the governing Agreement. The fixed price is not subject to adjustment based on the Contractor’s actual costs incurred in performing the services.
