About this file
This document describes a solicitation for gym equipment to support a United States Air Force pilot training program. The solicitation requests a powerlifting rack with cable attachment, weightlifting benches, bumper plates, medicine balls, bar storage, and training blocks to enable exercises that improve strength and conditioning for G-strain maneuvers. The powerlifting rack must allow for primary lifts and cable exercises in the limited 34' by 19' gym space. Bumper plates must be capable of being dropped from five feet. The gym equipment will support the Optimizing the Human Weapon System initiative by training muscle groups involved in operating aircraft capable of 9 Gs. The solicitation was issued by the Department of the Air Force Headquarters District Washington for delivery and installation at an unspecified location.

Salient Characteristics Sheet
Describe the requested item(s) in salient terms:
Physical characteristics = Gym equipment capable of training all muscle groups associated with the pilot G-strain strain maneuver (calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, abdominal, lat and lower back muscles).
Dimensions of the gym are 34’ x 19’ 4”. Equipment must include:
- One powerlifting rack package (primary color: black) with typical attachments (bar hangers, safety bar/straps, weight pins) and a side-mounted cable attachment o 11-gauge steel. Minimum dimensions: 47” wide, 62” long, 90” tall o Cable attachment must be capable of being utilized on the side of the rack (will be up against wall) and be adjustable for pull-up and pull-down exercises o Pull up bar across top for lat exercises o Cable machine attachments (straight bar, single-hand handle) o Custom logo-capable to display unit patch
- Three weightlifting benches with adjustable incline
- Bumper plates (color: black or blue) o 8x 45lb o 6x 35lb o 6x 25lb o 6x 10lb
- Bumper plate storage
- Medicine balls (color: black or blue) o 1x 10lb o 1x 12lb o 1x 14lb
- Bar storage
- Stackable training blocks (12x 2” tall, 18” wide, 14” wide)
- Glute/Hamstring Roller
Quote must include costs for delivery and professional installation/calibration.
Essential Characteristics = The powerlifting rack must enable power lifts (bench press, squat, shoulder press, clean and jerk). The cable attachment must support supplementary exercises (back extension, shoulder extension and core exercises). Multiple stand-alone racks or wall mounted cable machines are not acceptable due to the limited size of the gym they will be going into. The bumper plates must be capable of being dropped from a height of approximately five feet.
Functions to be performed = The new gym equipment will support and improve pilots’ physical training and conditioning as part of the US Air Force’s Optimizing the Human Weapon System (OHWS) program. The gym equipment will enable simultaneous exercises of multiple muscle groups and permit training the full spectrum of abdominal and leg muscles associated with the G-strain maneuver. The G-strain maneuver is utilized by our pilots when operating in excess of 4 Gs. Gs are equated to the weight of gravity multiplied by the preceding number. Example: 4 Gs equals 4 times the weight of gravity. The
G-strain maneuver keeps blood circulating through the brain and pilots conscious while operating under
G. The aircraft we fly is capable of pulling 9 Gs and our pilots routinely do so, hence the emphasis on quality equipment for training outside the cockpit.
