NOAA 2011-1 Small Business Innovative Research Questions and Answers #5

January 7, 2011

No further questions shall be accepted.

Q: Research Topic 1.2.SG: Is this subtopic about renewable alternative energy sources which specifically cater to the energy needs of any particular device or system like ships, offshore buoys or instruments operated by NOAA? What is the level of energy demand? For example, the energy to power an instrument will likely be smaller than the energy to power a ship. Does the energy have to be in any particular form, e.g. electricity? Or will NOAA entertain proposals aimed at harvesting energy for any general use?

A: The government is looking for proposals aimed at developing new technology in the specific areas listed Research Topic 8.1.2SG. This project is not specifically aimed for use by specific ships, buoys, or instruments for NOAA.

Q: Research Topic 8.1.6F: How was the IR camera deployed for collection of the video data (i.e. was it on shore, ship based, or aerial)? What was the approximate elevation of the instrument when recording?

A: The sensor is mounted on a tripod on shore. The sensors were approximately 26 m above sea level. The horizon was visible in the sensor’s field of view.

Q: Research Topic 8.1.6F: The topic has a general thrust towards generating a large sample of data on diel variation in grey whale migration rate from existing IR data, but also mentions future work towards collision avoidance system. Would you entertain proposals for the integration of another sensor technology in future phases which would improve performance both for data sampling and collision avoidance?

A: Yes we would entertain proposals that provide additional sensors to improve performance.

Cost of the overall system will be a consideration in review of proposals.
