About this file
This document outlines specifications for the purchase of two Foss Infratec Nova grain analyzers by the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Plant Science Research Unit. The analyzers will be used to measure grain protein and moisture content from thousands of maize breeding lines and experimental varieties as part of a USDA CERCA project. The analyzers must be capable of rapidly measuring protein, oil, and moisture contents of whole grain maize samples in less than 60 seconds per sample. Measurements produced by the analyzers must be consistent across research sites, therefore two FOSS Infratec NOVA analyzers will be purchased to match the machine already in use by a USDA-ARS researcher in Ames, Iowa. The analyzers must meet specified dimensions, weight, wavelength range, number of data points per scan, absorbance range, number of sub-samples, and scan and analysis speeds. The period of performance for the purchase is July 2023.

SPECIFICATIONS
Near-infrared Reflectance grain analyzers
1. Purchase two (2) Foss Infratec Nova grain analyzers. Devices will be used to measure grain protein and moisture content from thousands of breeding lines and experimental maize (corn) varieties as part of USDA CERCA project.
2. Device will be setup and deployed by local staff.
3. Place of performance: USDA-ARS Plant Science Research Unit Room 2105 Plant Sciences Building, 840 Oval Drive Campus Box 7825, Raleigh, NC 27606
4. Point of Contact: Jim Holland, 919-513-2162, jim.holland@usda.gov
5. Period of Performance: Purchase in July, 2023
6. Government Furnished: N/A
7. Performance Requirement Measures:
The lab needs two near-infrared spectrophotometers capable of rapidly (< 60 s per sample) measuring protein, oil, and moisture contents of whole grain samples of maize. These measurements will be used in a collaborative research project with Dr. Paul Scott, USDA-ARS, Ames, IA, where consistency of measurements across research sites is imperative. Therefore, we need to purchase FOSS Infratec NOVA analyzers to match the machine already being used by Dr. Scott. Specifications include:
Dimensions (W x D x H) equal to or less than 410 x 460 x 445 mm Weight equal to or less than 31 kg Measurement mode: Transmittance Wavelength range: 400-1100 nm Number of data points/scan: minimum 1400 Absorbance range: 0-5 AU Number of sub-samples: 1-30 Scan speed: 1 sec/scan or less Analysis time: less than or equal to 38 sec for 10 sub-samples
