Statement of Work

Project Title: Women Leaders in Global Health

Period of Performance: September 29, 2016 – September 28, 2017

Introduction and Background:

The Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity (COSWD) leads and oversees NIH efforts to improve biomedical research and the Nation’s health through a more diverse scientific workforce. Workforce diversity and inclusion is imperative to optimize the strength of the NIH research enterprise. Therefore, the purpose of the office of Scientific Workforce Diversity is to develop and implement initiatives enhancing diversity and promoting equity throughout the biomedical research workforce, including the extramural and intramural components of the NIH.

In the U.S. and in many countries around the world, women comprise up to 75 percent of the health workforce and represent the majority of individuals in academic global health studies. Young women are entering careers in global health by increasing numbers, yet the percentage of women decreases at each step of the career ladder. In the top 50 medical schools, fewer than 25% of global health leadership positions are held by women.

Responding to the underrepresentation of women in health leadership positions, COSWD is seeking support services to develop an event to support and foster leadership among female scientists, researchers and teachers from academia, nonprofits, foundations, corporations and government in the health sector.

Addressing these issues is urgent and we have a compelling need to develop programming.

The goal of this proposal is to develop programming that will provide an opportunity for women early in their careers to 1) network with and learn from women in senior leadership positions, including NIH leadership, 2) participate in an immersive leadership workshop to gain practical leadership skills to further their career trajectories in the health sciences, 3) provide a forum to exchange knowledge and present scientific research. With an emphasis on international participation, this program will raise the profile of NIH among established and emerging women leaders and lay the foundation for future interactions for recruitment to scientific positions at NIH, as well as engagement with NIH-led initiatives and programs.

With contractor support, the proposed event development will lead to a successful program highlighting emerging and established women leaders in global health to provide them with the tools to be successful leaders. The support this proposal is seeking is logistical and administrative support for activities associated with the inaugural event to be held at Stanford University in early October 2017.
