Submarine Bridge Trainers

Engineering Development Model

Projector System

STATEMENT OF WORK

Procurement Sensitive Information See FAR 3.104 1

1.0 BACKGROUND

The Submarine Bridge Trainer (SBT) allows a full bridge party to complete exercises to navigate, pilot, and moor the boat to and from a pier while interacting with a complex visual and auditory environment with all of the relevant ship sensors and systems. The crew members being trained are those who man the sail and the control room during surfaced events. The trainer is a near life-size mock-up of the front-end of a generic submarine sail, surrounded by a 360-degree horizontal and a 70-degree vertical dynamic visual simulation of imagery and 16 channels of 3D sound with own-ship dynamics provided by Navy-certified hydrodynamic models. Realistic control rooms for the 688-class and Virginia-class submarines have been constructed and provide the ship systems (including commercial and military radar simulations) and the dual periscopes needed for surfaced events.

2.0 SCOPE

Code 253 is tasked to integrate a Projection System into the existing NUWCDIVNPT Submarine

Bridge Trainer (SBT) Engineering Development Model (EDM), located in building 1171/CSTL.

The contractor shall deliver, install, configure and perform all necessary diagnostic testing to ensure optimum performance of the projection system for the SBT EDM at NUWCDIVNPT.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS

The contractor shall perform all installation work in the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport RI 02840, Code 25, Submarine Bridge Team Trainer area located in building 1171

Combat System Technology Laboratory.

4.1 Projection System

The contractor shall deliver and install a projector system capable of projecting a virtual marine environment with a 360 degree horizontal field of view and a 70 degree vertical field of view (20 degree above and 50 degree below the horizon); upon the existing projection display screen; a constructed 14 foot radius spherical dome with its equator on the same plane as the reference eye-point of the projection system. Each unit of the overall projection system shall meet the minimum requirements specified in Appendix A: "Required Technical Characteristics".

4.1.1 Projector System Synchronization, Alignments, Color Matching and Image Warping

The contractor shall perform projector system alignments, adjustments, color matching and image warping necessary to achieve visual characteristics described in Appendix A: "Required

Technical Characteristics". The contractor shall synchronize all projectors to match color, brightness (maximum white) and darkness (minimum black) between channels.

An exception to the requirement for the full vertical FOV coverage exists for the lower projector bank for the zone directly to the rear of the trainer where the access ladder will shadow the projected image. (Appendix B Bridge Team Trainer Design Schematic –

A)

The contractor shall install the upper projector system assembly concurrent with the start of the hardware installation schedule. The contractor shall install the lower projector system assembly one week after installation of the upper projector system assembly.
