Statement of Requirements

Synthesis and Characterization of Reactive Materials Department of Physics

Naval Postgraduate School

1.0 Background/Introduction:

The Naval Postgraduate School requires an Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) system to machine samples manufactured via powder metallurgy. This machining technique is widely recognized by the community as the preferred technique for machining samples that cannot be machined with traditional methods. The proposed Sodick VL400Q machine meets all the technical requirements, and can be delivered in two pieces, each capable of fitting through 59” doorways.

2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:

NPS requires an Electrical Discharge Machining system with the following characteristics:

1. Sodick VL400Q Wire EDM

2. Annealing automatic EDM wire threader.

3. Wire diameter range: 0.001” to 0.012”

4. Work tank dimensions (W x D): 33.85” x 27.16”

5. Maximum workpiece weight: 1,100 lbs

6. X-axis travel of 15.75”, Y-axis travel of 11.81”, Z-axis travel of 8.66”, U-axis travel of 3.15”, and V-axis travel of 3.15”.

7. Machine dimensions: 79.52” x 90.94” x 78.34”.

8. Linear drive motors on X,Y,U,V axes with a minimum drive unit of measure of 0.1µm.

9. Absolute glass scales on X,Y,U,V axes

10. Maximum work piece weight of 1,000 lbs.

11. CNC controller unit included with USB and LAN connection ports.

12. Antielectrolysis circuit

13. Built in purification system and dielectric chiller.

14. 0.01, 0.008, and 0.004 inch wire guides.

15. Large spool capacity of at least 22 lbs.

16. Precision wire tensioning system.

17. Wire alignment block (manual and automatic).

18. The ability to cut taper angles up to 22 degrees.

19. Provide a 5 year warranty and 10 year guarantee on system positioning calibration.

20. Machine must be capable of being delivered partially disassembled to fit through a 59” doorway.

21. Training for NPS personnel on use of EDM

Delivery must occur within 20 weeks of receipt of order.
