A BendPro controller is currently installed on one bending machine at Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI). The controller at NASNI was the first to be installed of this brand. This action will be the second Computer Numerical Control (CNC) pipe bender to have a BendPro controller installed.

BendPro controllers are extremely accurate and create repeatable results which produce higher quality parts. The installation of this BendPro controller is part of a standardization process for both Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) and NASNI. Having standard CNC pipe bender controllers increases operator efficiency and reduces operator training expenses. One common type of controller allows for standardize training of operators and prepares the operators for Temporary Duty (TYD). Additionally, once all controllers are standardized all operators will be able to operate machines at both PSNS and NASNI.

The standardization of controllers increases operator safety through familiarization with the control system and emergency buttons. Operators require 3 to 5 days of training on each different type of controllers, a single brand of controllers will reduce the multiple days of training required for each machine to a single day.

The controller is compatible with most commercial brands of bending machines. As such, this does not limit competition for the purchase of future pipe bending machines. Having a standard controller is similar to how Microsoft Word can be used on HP, Dell, etc. computers; it is a common program for various hardware systems. BendPro G2 controllers are also able to be retrofitted to other existing CNC bending machines at PSNS. BendPro G2 interfaces with our current Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) (i.e. FARO) programs, which automatically imports tube/piping geometries. This allows for faster programming by operators and reducing data entry errors. This controller can be configured to grant or revoke specific permissions to individual users and/or groups of users. This ability prevents unauthorized access to certain control system files and functions.

The manufacturer of BendPro provides unlimited phone and internet support from experience engineers at offices in Denver, Nashville, and the UK. The controller manufacturer is a USA company that was established in 1988 with over 1,800 bender controls in the field; this provides an established readily available comical product. It is required that access to quick customer support is critical for the operators and maintenance personnel to ensure production is not delayed awaiting technical guidance that can be limited if support is not available during normal business hours for PSNS.

The ability to standardize a controller brand allows PSNS to reduces operator training by an average of 24 hours per machine per operator, allows operators to use same controllers at different facilities, increases operator safety, does not prohibit future competition for new bending machine, and allows for retrofits to new or existing machines.

__X__ The requested material or service represents the minimum requirements of the government.
