Providing Quality Maintenance and Chemical Specialty Solutions with Unparalleled Customer Service

Concrete Seal is a protective, non yellowing seal, effective on either old or newly laid concrete floors. It protects against grease, dirt, and damaging stains, and prevents the concrete from dusting or powdering. During the concrete’s curing process, the seal forms a membrane to retain moisture and regulate the evaporation rate resulting in a harder, more abrasion resistant surface.

Easily maintained and resistant to alkaline salts, Concrete Seal may be used on exterior as well as interior concrete.

THE CURING PROCESS:

The hardening or curing process of concrete gives newly laid floors its strength. The strength of the concrete is directly related to the length of the curing process. In other words, the longer the curing process is extended, the stronger your floor becomes.

Concrete hardens because of a chemical reaction between cement and water. The strength of concrete continues to increase as long as moisture is present for hydration.

Concrete Seal forms a curing membrane which retains the moisture in the concrete and regulates the evaporation rate providing a complete cure, and resulting in a harder, more abrasion resistant surface.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Some individuals may be sensitive to ingredients in this product. Before use, read product label and Safety Data Sheet. If questions remain, consult your employer or a physician.

1. Machine scrub the floor with a 1:10 dilution of Spartan’s SC-200 and water. Urethane seals should either be sanded off or removed with strippers formulated for this purpose. Rinse and let dry.

2. Apply one coat of Concrete Seal using a lamb’s wool applicator, spraying equipment or rollers. Avoid puddling.

3. After allowing the first coat five to six hours to dry, apply a second coat, moving the applicator in one direction only.

4. Allow overnight drying before use.

Sealing New Concrete:

1. As soon as floor is hard enough to support weight, apply Spartan’s Concrete Seal in a uniform coat. To prevent snagging on porous floors, only rollers or sprayers should be used.

2. It is important to cover all portions of the floor -a gallon of Concrete Seal will cover 400 to 600 square feet.

3. Do not apply plastic sheets, hay or straw on top of Concrete Seal.

4. The floor will be ready for use approximately four to six hours after sealing.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

• It is very important to have adequate ventilation.

• Any foods, wrapped or unwrapped, should be removed from the room to be sealed.

• Although Concrete Seal may be applied over painted surfaces, a small area should be tested prior to complete application. Most paints may be applied over Concrete Seal.

Again, a test area is recommended.

• The floor should be clean and dry.

• Do not acid etch the floor.

• Clean equipment should be used.

• The temperature of the area and materials should not be lower than 60°.

• All pilot lights or open flames should be turned off.

• Ample lighting is important to assure complete coverage of the floor.

NOTE: Concrete Seal does not require thinning before use. It is not recommended for use on quarry tile or any other glazed surfaces. Concrete Seal penetrates the surface, resulting in an exceptionally durable seal. Therefore, the user may experience difficulty in removing Concrete Seal.

CLEAN UP

Clean tools and equipment with MasterSeal® 990 immediately after use and while MasterKure® CC 300 XS is still wet.

FOR BEST PERFORMANCE

• MasterKure CC 300 XS is not recommended for interior spaces with poor ventilation as the odor may be objectionable. MasterKure CC 1315 is a water-based alternative for such applications that should be considered.

• MasterKure CC 300 XS is a solvent-based material. Consideration should be given to the odor such solvent-based materials produce.

Adjacent inhabited buildings or adjoining parklands and play areas in usage should be evaluated for the effects such odors may have on those with a high personal sensitivity to said odors.

• Application of MasterKure CC 300 XS is recommended between 50° F to 80° F (10° C to 27° C). To reduce incidence of bubbling of the drying film, application is recommended on cooler, overcast days or in the evening hours when ambient and substrate temperatures are dropping.

• The use of MasterKure CC 300 XS in rapid drying conditions is discouraged. Rapid drying conditions are characterized by direct sunlight, elevated ambient and substrate temperatures and excessive wind.

• Do not thin.

• Keep away from heat and open flame.

• Application not recommended when surface temperatures exceed 80° F (27° C).

• For best appearance and performance, apply uniformly and at recommended coverage rates.

• If MasterKure CC 300 XS is to be applied in or near areas containing foodstuffs, they must be removed before application; do not return foodstuffs until MasterKure CC 300 XS has fully dried and all solvent vapors have dissipated.

HOW TO APPLY

SURFACE PREPARATION

1. Freshly placed concrete must be properly finished. The surface is application ready when it is damp, but not wet, and when it cannot be marred by foot traffic.

2. Existing concrete surfaces should be thoroughly repaired and cleaned before application. Surface must be clean, dry and free of dust, oil, grease, sealers and all other surface contaminants that might inhibit proper bond of material.

APPLICATION

1. Stir MasterKure CC 300 XS thoroughly before using.

2. Apply a continuous, uniform film by short 1/4”

(0.64 cm) nap, solvent-resistant roller cover.

Keep roller wet and maintain a wet edge. Do not re-roll excessively as bubbling will occur.

Spraying is not recommended.

3. For curing, only 1 coat is necessary. Apply evenly and uniformly after final finishing.

4. To seal and dustproof, 2 coats are required.

Apply the second application when all trades have completed their work and site is ready for occupancy.

5. Do not overapply or soak concrete surfaces with the curing compound. Do not allow the curing compound to pool on the surface. Over-application can result in alligatoring and mud cracking, whereby a film forms on the substrate before the material dries properly.

Over- application may also cause opacity, as elements of the curing compound become trapped in the subsurface and cannot escape.

MasterFinish EA Technical Data Sheet www.master-builders-solutions.com/en-us page 2 of 4

Guidelines for Use Yield: 100 – 150 ft2/gal (2.5 – 3.7 m2/L).

Placing the Concrete:

1. Prepare a concrete mix design that will satisfy the structural and architectural requirements. This may include an integral color and a special aggregate.

2. Place the concrete and screed, float or trowel level. Do not tamp or overwork the top surface as this drives the aggregate away from the top surface and thereby diminishes the depth and uniformity of exposure.

3. Use a wood float or bull float to work the top surface. Do not overwork the surface with a steel trowel as this tends to seal the top surface, restricting the penetration of the chemical retarder.

4. Additional aggregate may be sprinkled on the top surface and should be carefully worked in, making sure that the aggregate is completely surrounded by cement paste. (Use of a roller jitterbug is very helpful in this operation).

Mixing the Retarder: Turn the MasterFinish EA retarder pail upside down and shake well.

Application:

1. Spray MasterFinish EA retarder as soon as the surface water has disappeared (usually in approximately 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions).

2. MasterFinish EA retarder is sprayed on the top surface of the concrete with an ordinary low pressure garden sprayer at the rate of 100 - 150 ft2/gal (2.5 – 3.7 m2/L).

3. Protect areas adjacent to the job from over spray, as MasterFinish EA retarder may stain these areas.

Same Day Water Washing: In some cases, the retarded matrix can be washed off the same day the concrete is poured.

However, timing is critical and many factors, such as the ones detailed below, have to be considered in order to guarantee an acceptable finish.

Note: Anything which will affect the set of the concrete such as ambient temperature, wind - whether the concrete is in full sun or shade, or whether the surface is flat or on a slope

- must be taken into consideration. In determining when to wash off the retarded matrix, with so many variables affecting the set of the concrete, it is impossible to give a time frame.

As soon as the concrete has hardened sufficiently (the concrete has set and is strong enough to support the weight of a person), wash off a small area to check the depth of etch. If the etch is too deep, wait for an hour and test it again.

When the etch is sufficient, hose off the top surface with water and use a stiff broom or brush to remove the retarded matrix, thereby exposing the aggregate. High pressure water is more efficient and should be used when available.

Covering and Washing:

1. Immediately after applying MasterFinish EA retarder, cover the concrete with plastic sheeting, securing around the edges to prevent ballooning. The plastic sheeting should be in direct contact with the top surface of the freshly poured concrete.

2. After the concrete has hardened sufficiently, generally overnight, remove the plastic sheeting in sections, checking a small area to determine if the proper depth has been achieved. If the depth appears to be too deep, wait for a few hours and check again.

3. Hose the top surface of the concrete with water and use a stiff broom or brush to remove the retarded matrix, thereby exposing the aggregate. (High pressure water is more efficient and should be used when available). Concrete sprayed with MasterFinish EA retarder must be washed with water the next morning.

Note: In hot or windy conditions, the retarded matrix may have to be removed the same day whether it was covered with plastic or not.

Clean Up: Clean all tools and spray equipment with soap and water immediately after use.

For Best Performance MasterFinish EA retarder will freeze at low temperatures.

MasterFinish EA retarder must be applied immediately after surface or bleed water disappears. Delay in application will affect depth of etch.

Do not store in metal spray equipment more than 2-3 hours.

 Recommended maximum concrete temperature is 110 °F (43 °C).

Since retarded concrete will eventually harden, the surface should be checked periodically to determine the depth of etch. When the temperature is high, or if high-early strength cement is used, check the surface earlier and more frequently.

Mock Up Skill and practice are necessary to produce any high quality architectural finish. Samples and mock-ups duplicating actual production conditions are essential to obtain a representative finish for approval prior to commencing production.

Some important variables that should be controlled as close to actual cast conditions include: retarder coverage rate and method of application, mixture proportions and slump, admixtures, temperature of plastic and cured concrete, vibration, thickness of the element, length of time in form and method of cleaning.

This is especially important with light etches which are particularly affected by changing conditions.

Changes in mixture proportions (cement, sand, aggregate, and water), admixture content, temperature and any other factor influencing compressive strength development should be kept to a minimum. If white cement (Type III) is used in the face mix, consult your local sales representative.

TOP-CAST

Top-Surface Retarder

Product Description

TOP-CAST is a water-based, top-surface retarder which does not require covering with plastic for protection. It is available in 12 depths of etch, each one color and number coded for safety and convenience.

Product Advantages

Product Uses

Ideal for poured-in-place flatwork and the top surface of precast panels. The wide selection of grades available provides a comprehensive range of effects, from a simulated light acid wash or sand blast finish up to full exposure of 1

1⁄4 in. (32 mm) aggregate.

Performance

Each product grade creates a unique degree of reaction to produce the desired effect on the surface mortar. The retarding chemicals diffuse into the paste during the first hours of curing and slow down the cement hydration reaction. During the next 16+ hours of curing the bulk concrete hardens, except where the cement matrix has been retarded. The retarded surface can then be removed by water or pressurized water, revealing the aggregate in the concrete mix.

Application Information

Always prepare small test panels to determine the most suitable grade to obtain the desired depth of etch. When pouring test samples, always simulate job site conditions as well as mix designs to be used on the project to establish the proper grade selection and procedures.

Comprehensive range of etch depths

Excellent depth of etch control

Color coded products

Heavily pigmented for ease of application

Excellent coverage rates

Solvent free, odorless

Heat resistance up to 150°F (65°C)

Product Data Sheets

Application

In preparation for pouring of concrete, protect all curbs, borders, adjacent stones, pavers, etc. with a coat of TOP-

CAST SS-100 surface protectant. Allow coating to dry before pouring concrete. Pour concrete and float or trowel finish. Alternatively, screed away excess water, and hand seed extra stone into top surface, if desired. Finish with a

Darby trowel to keep concrete pores open for surface retarder application.

Mix TOP-CAST thoroughly before application. Apply TOP-CAST surface retarder uniformly to the wet concrete after the initial bleed water rises to the surface. Spray with a low-pressure sprayer (plastic preferred) until the surface has a complete hiding coat. Do not apply too sparingly. Use water for clean up. Once dry (1-2 hours after application), TOP-

CAST provides good protection against intermittent rain and does not require additional cover.

Removal

Wash off with high-pressure water. Actual removal time for the desired appearance varies based upon concrete mix design, finishing technique, weather conditions and grade of TOP-CAST used. The retarded cement matrix can be removed as early as 4 hours and up to 16 hours depending on conditions. Complete your project with one of the products from the TOP-CAST decorative finish system.

Coverage Rates

TOP-CAST surface retarder will cover approximately 200–300 ft /gal (4.9–7.4 m /L).

Description Ultra-low-modulus sealant for masonry, concrete and natural stone façades. DOWSIL™ 790

Silicone Building Sealant provides excellent performance, even in building joints that experience extreme movement. It places a low stress on the sealant/substrate bond line to minimize failures in moving joints.

DOWSIL™ 790 Silicone Building Sealant is available in black and gray.

Approvals/ Specifications

This sealant meets or exceeds the requirements of:

• ISO 11600F 25LM

• EN15651 – CE MARK

• ASTM Specification C 920, Type S, Grade NS, Class 100/50, Use T, NT, M, G, A, and

O

How to Use Surface Preparation Ensure that surfaces to be sealed are clean, dry, sound and grease-free. Porous substrates such as concrete, brickwork, mortar, etc. must be mechanically cleaned of loose particles using a steel brush, sanding disc or any similar means. Clean non-porous surface with DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner, dry thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth and wait for at least half an hour before application of sealant.

Note: When using any solvent, always provide adequate ventilation. Avoid heat, sparks and open flames. Use solvent resistant gloves. Observe and follow all precautions listed on solvent container label.

Masking Areas adjacent to the joints should be masked with tape to prevent contamination of the substrates and to ensure a neat sealant line. Masking tape should be removed immediately after tooling.

Priming Primers are not usually required on stone, concrete and masonry substrates. On non-porous substrates such as anodized aluminum, priming might be needed. It is recommended to carry out test on such substrates to assess the need for priming. A suitable primer on non-porous substrates is DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer. Allow at least half an hour between priming and sealant application. Please contact Dow’s technical service in case of doubt.

Page 3 of 4 © 2019–2020 The Dow Chemical Company. All rights reserved. Form No. 62-2147-01-0220 S2D

How to Use (Cont.) Back-up Materials Where back-up material is required, open cell backer rod is recommended. Back-up materials provide back pressure and avoid three sided adhesion that limits sealant movement capability.

Finishing The joint should be tooled within 5 minutes of application to ensure good contact between the sealant and the substrate. Tooling of the sealant also gives a smooth, professional finish.

Clean-Up If sealant is misapplied to porous substrates, it should be left until it is just cured and then removed by peeling, cutting or other mechanical means. Care should be taken not to damage plastic or coated surfaces.

Joint Design The sealant joint width should be designed to accommodate the movement capability of the sealant. When designing joints using DOWSIL™ 790 Silicone Building Sealant, the minimum width should be 6 mm. For joints between 6–12 mm wide, a seal depth of 6 mm is required. For joints above 12 mm wide, a width to depth ratio of 2:1 should be used. As the sealant joint width becomes larger than 25 mm, the depth should be held at approximately 9 mm to 12 mm. In situations where fillet joints are needed, a minimum of 6 mm sealant bite to each substrate is recommended. For joint dimensions with a width greater than 25 mm or a depth greater than 15 mm, please contact your regional service centers for technical assistance.

Usable Life and Storage

When stored at or below 32°C, DOWSIL™ 790 Silicone Building Sealant has a shelf life of 12 months from date of manufacture. Refer to product packaging for “Use By” date.

Limitations DOWSIL™ 790 Silicone Building Sealant should not be applied:

• In structural applications.

• Below grade or to materials that outgas, which can cause bubbling in curing sealant.

• On brass or copper or other similar material that can be corroded.

• To surfaces that are continuously immersed in water.

• For use as an interior penetration firestop sealing system.

• To building materials that bleed oils, plasticizers, or solvents – materials such as impregnated wood, oil based caulks, green or partially vulcanized rubber gaskets, or tapes or bituminous below-grade waterproofing and asphalt-impregnated fiberboard.

• In totally confined spaces because the sealant requires atmospheric moisture for cure.

• To surfaces that will be painted after application. The paint film will not stretch with the extension of the sealant and may crack and peel and most likely will not adhere to the sealant.

• To surfaces in direct or indirect contact with food.

Page 4 of 4 ®Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company Form No. 62-2147-01-0220 S2D

Limitations (Cont.) • To wet or frost-laden surfaces.

• In applications where solvents or primers are not fully dried prior to sealant application.

Uncured sealant is very sensitive to many solvents, primers, and cleaning agents; these may cause the sealant to remain uncured or tacky.

This product is neither tested nor represented as suitable for medical or pharmaceutical uses.
