Question and Answers 3/11:

Question:

In Section 9 of the Advance Traversing Antenna Tower, it states

9. EMI

a. The transmit tower and all provided equipment shall meet MIL-STD-461G RE102 for radiated emissions between 100MHz-40GHz.

b. All provided electrical components of the transmit tower shall meet MIL-STD-461G RS 103 for radiated susceptibility.

The solicitation is for Commercial Products & Services.

It seems that the MIL-STD-461G contradict the requirement for Commercial Products as products that meet these requirements would have undergone special testing for conformance.

Please confirm if the requirements listed in Section 9 are required or a design goal.

Answer:

The Antenna (like most in industry) is going to have built in RF shielding which helps prevent interference. Those compliance factors are built into the building materials when they construct it. RF Antenna’s (EW/EM/RF) related items are going to have built in RF Interference reductions for there products. This is important to give us accurate testing results.

The absorber treatment probably is a part of the build to prevent interference, RF cables alone are built (like ethernet cables in a smaller scale) to have a double coating built around the cable to prevent interference while running twisted wires as a better industry standard and progress CAT 4 to CAT 5, 6, etc.

For the optional part of the quote, they offer to test their product to ensure it meets MIL EMI spec’s. We have tools to detect RF leaks or interference but if we could get a guarantee to ensure what we receive won’t give us headache troubleshooting RF interference then great! Saves us gov time and money although we’ll still need to occasional due interference testing every time we configure a new set up with these antenna’s.

Yes but it should be an industry standard, however we just want to ensure it covers the bandwidth we are asking for.

4.2.4.1 Commercial items (CI). 4.2.4.1.1 Selected by contractor. When it is demonstrated that a CI selected by the contractor is responsible for equipment or subsystems failing to meet the contractual EMI requirements, either the CI shall be modified or replaced or interference suppression measures shall be employed, so that the equipment or subsystems meet the contractual EMI requirements.
