QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
FROM: AFTC/PZI (Holloman)
SUBJECT: FA9101-18-Q-2001, Lifting Lug Components
1. Reference Drawing X20172265, Lug Bar
1.1. The line in plan view and ISO drawing which is tangent to the 8” rad where the corner rounding ends should probably not run across the full width of the part.
The line indicates where the machining stops. Above the line the part is machined and below, the part is the rough mill finish.
1.2. Can the square corners of the 16” wide slot have a relief notch or in the alternative can there be a female radius in the corners with a corresponding chamfer or make radius on one edge of the
LUG SHEAR PLATE Z20172263?
A relief notch is not acceptable. However, a corner radius (2”) is acceptable, the radius will be machined on the mating part.
1.3. There does not seem to be any 8” thick rolled plate in 4130 material, therefore these parts will require either a mill order or forgings to be made. Forging deliveries are optimistically running at least 6-8 weeks and forgings entail additional time for machining to square-up to the sizes shown. Mill orders require extended delivery allowance. As a consequence, the required delivery of 10 weeks as per the RFQ is not achievable. Our only alternative is to quote delivery
“best?” Will this be acceptable?
The delivery time of 10 weeks ARO is a minimum requirement and non-negotiable due to project deadlines.
2. Reference Drawing X20172263, Lug Shear Plate
2.1. Possible need for radius or chamfer on the 15 edges on one side of the part. See remarks in discussion of LUG BAR.
After burning out the part, all edges should have the edges chamfered by hand to remove any cutting slag/scale. ½” chamfer is required.
3. Reference Drawing X20172264, Lug Plate
3.1. Can the square corners of the 4.25 x 32.25 opening have a relief slot or in the alternative can there be female radii in the corners with a corresponding radius or chamfer on the four corners of the LUG BAR X20172265 extending from the square end of the LUG BAR for a length of
20.25 inches?
A relief notch is not acceptable. The inside will be machined (by USAF personnel) to fit over the mating part. The vendor should leave ¾” material on all burned surfaces to allow the machining cut to get under the heat effected zone of the cut.
4. Reference Drawing X20172262, Lug Assembly
4.1. Notes 5 and 7 pertaining to the welding are difficult to read. The “TEC ORDER” specification cannot be found on line. Can these specifications be provided? In the alternative, would welding IAW AWS D1 be acceptable?
The completed lug assembly specification is provided for reference use only to allow vendors to see the completed lifting lugs. All machining and welding will be completed by
USAF personnel at Holloman AFB, NM.
4.2. No painting or protective finish or rust inhibitors for outdoor storage are specified. Will such specification be included?
No paint or protection are required.
