SECTION 02700 CHAIN LINK FENCING AND GATES
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 EXTENT OF WORK
A. Fence Work shall consist of providing all labor, material, transportation, equipment and services to complete the installation of the fence and gates as shown on or reasonably implied by the Drawings and Specifications.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit shop drawings for chain link fence and entry gates showing details of the following:
1. Fence fabric including barb wire or security toppings
2. Posts
3. Gates
4. Accessories
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 CHAIN LINK FABRIC
A. Fabric shall be 9-gauge aluminum or galvanized steel wire helically wound and interwoven to provide a continuous mesh without knot or ties within the mesh. Mesh size shall be 2 inches measured between parallel wires in any direction. Openings shall form a diamond shape.
B. Knuckle both selvages of 60-inch fabric. Knuckle bottom and twist top of fabric 72-inches high and over.
C. Hot-dip zinc coat fabric, after fabrication, according to AASHTO M181 Type I. Weight of zinc coating shall not be less than 1.8 ounces per square feet of actual surface covered. Zinc to conform to ASTM B6.
D. Provide and install aluminum privacy strips interwoven in the fabric, color to be chosen by
Owner.
2.2 POSTS, RAILS AND BRACES
A. All posts and braces shall conform to AASHTO M181.
B. Steel pipe shall be heavy wall, hot dipped galvanized, round according to ASTM A53 Table X2, ASTM F1083 (Schedule 40), and AASHTO MIII.
C. Posts shall have the following dimensions and weights:

D. Posts and line caps or combination tops with supporting arms shall conform to ASTM F626.
2.3 TENSION WIRES AND WIRE TIES
A. Steel tension wire shall be 7-gauge, 0.177-inch minimum diameter, marcelled or crimped coil spring hard-tempered carbon steel wire.
B. Wire ties and C-rings shall conform to ASTM F626.
C. Zinc coat of 1.8 ounces per square foot of surface area per AASHTO M181.
2.4 TRUSS OR TENSION RODS
A. Provide a rod not less than 3/4-inch nominal diameter.
B. Adjustment shall be provided by a galvanized turnbuckle for each rod.
2.5 TENSION BARS, BRACES AND TENSION BANDS
A. Conform to requirements of ASTM F626.
B. Tension bars shall not be less than 1/4 inch by 3/4 inch and not shorter than the nominal height of the fabric less 2 inches.
2.6 GATES
A. Gate frames shall be constructed of round pipe (Schedule 40), having 1-7/8 inches O.D. and zinc coating per ASTM A120.
B. Provide horizontal, vertical and diagonal truss bracing to prevent sag or twist.
C. Steel welds shall be painted with zinc-based paint.

D. Gate fabric shall meet the requirements of Article 2.10 of this Section.
2.7 HINGES
A. Provide hinges of adequate strength for gate weight with large bearing surfaces for clamping.
2.8 LATCHES AND STOPS
A. Provide fork type latch with center drop rod or plunger bar type of full gate height.
B. Provide for locking of gates in closed position with the use of padlock.
C. Submit detailed information for approval.
2.9 ROLLER AND TRACK
A. Gate track shall consist of zinc-coated pipe (Schedule 40) per ASTM A120.
B. Use minimum 2-3/8 inch O.D. pipe.
C. Rollers shall be of adequate size and strength to support the intended loads and application.
D. Submit detailed information for approval.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 POST INSTALLATION
A. Space line posts equidistant at intervals not exceeding 10 feet.
B. Terminal posts (end, corner and gate) shall be set at beginning and end of continuous length of fence and at abrupt changes in vertical (15 degrees or more) and horizontal alignments, and at 50 foot intervals in straight line continuous runs exceeding 700 feet.
C. Set all posts in holes 4 times the diameter of the largest cross-section of the post. Backfill concrete (2,500 psi) into the excavation and extend 2 inches above grade. Crown the concrete at the top to shed water and extend the footing a minimum of 6 inches below the bottom of the post. Footings shall not be less than 36 inches deep.
D. Corner, slope and gateposts shall be braced with a diagonal tension bar, securely fastened between the terminal post and the adjacent line post. There shall be no more than a 50-degree angle for the diagonal brace.
E. Posts shall be vertical in position, plumb and in line.

3.2 TENSION WIRE INSTALLATION
A. All fence shall be installed with top and bottom tension wires; unless a tension bar is specified.
B. Fasten tension wires within the top and bottom 6 inches of fabric.
C. Tension wire shall be taut and free of sag.
3.3 CHAIN LINK FABRIC INSTALLATION
A. Fabric shall be placed on the outside of area enclosed.
B. Secure fabric at one end and place with sufficient tension to remove slack.
C. Install fence fabric 2 inches above ground level - unless otherwise directed by the Owner.
D. Fasten fabric to line post at intervals not exceeding 15 inches.
E. Fasten fabric to tension wire with C-rings, intervals not to exceed 24 inches.
F. Fabric shall have a continuous mesh. Weave rolls together using a single picket, if needed.
3.4 GATE AND HARDWARE INSTALLATION
A. Hinges shall not twist or turn under the gate action.
B. Gates shall be capable of opening and closing easily by one person.
C. Install gate on hinges to prevent removal by lift-off.
D. Locking devices shall be constructed so that the center drop rod or plunger bar cannot be raised when locked.
