Centralized Welding Fume Extraction System
B9001 Site Visit Questions
This document contains questions provided by vendors who participated in the site visit located in B9001 on March 27, 2017. These questions were forwarded to and answered by the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for this requirement.
1. Should there be protection on the Hepa Filters so that they do not get damaged if they are after the exhaust of the fan?
Answer: Yes
2. Is 10” of SP included for the ductwork and fume arms only? Does it account for 5” of static pressure across a dirty set of filters to ensure the fume extraction is still pulling 14,400 CFM?
Answer: The static pressure requirement should be 16 inches.
3. Would a sprinkler system qualify as fire detection and suppression? If not, exactly what is required for the fire detection and suppression?
Answer: Yes, a sprinkler system qualifies as fire detection and suppression
4. What is the diameter requirement for the fume arms? Eight (8) inches?
Answer: 6” is preferred, but 8” is acceptable.
5. If there is 12 fume arms and each fume arm requires 1200 CFM, shouldn’t the total CFM referenced be 14,400 CFM and not minimum of 13,000CFM?
Answer: 8” diameter fume arms require 1500 CFM. 6” diameter fume arms require 900 CFM.
The 13,000 CFM minimum is for systems with 6” fume arms.
6. What is the maximum height for the dust collectors if we were to put at this location? Can it be 245” tall? Can depth exceed 73”? Can depth be 84”?
Answer: The height of the filtration unit/dust collector should not exceed 180 inches, as there is an overhead crane system in the area. 84 inch depth will be accceptable.
7. Are in line spark arrestors required?
Answer: Yes
8. Is Quick Fit/rolled lip or spiral duct required?
Answer: Either is acceptable
9. What is the maximum air to cloth ratio?
Answer: The air to cloth ratio shall not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended ratio for welding fumes
10. Is a VFD required?
Answer: Provided as an option
11. How many hoods per booth?
Answer: One (1) hood per booth/drop location.
12. Fire suppression required?
13. Question related to the height restriction of 10” for the dust collector. There is hardly any room to fit a hopper with floor stand within the height restriction. It would be recommended to specify a dust drawer instead. Otherwise, we can only fit a very small drum. Will a dust drawer be ok?
Answer: Yes, a dust drawer will be acceptable.
14. Is the dust collector going to be installed inside or outside?
Answer: Inside
15. Is water available within 50 ft of the collector? The spark arrestor requires 20 gpm at 50 psi.
16. Is the electrical within 50’ of the dust collector location? If so, what voltage and amperage is available?
Answer: Utilities will be provided within 20 feet. 460V AC, 100A, 3 Phase, 60 Hz.
