Questions and Answers (Q&A) Tube Bender Machine

These questions and answers are posted in response to inquiries regarding the required physical characteristics and features for the CNC Tube Bender machine for use by United States Air Force (USAF) personnel in the 76 CMXG Tube and Cable Shop.

Q1. We have two 1.5” options –a hybrid: (all hydraulic with electric C axis) or all electric. Which type do you prefer?

A1. A hydraulic system is required. An electric C axis is acceptable.

Q2. Both benders have a raise and fall clamp versus direct acting “Stationary” clamp, we are not sure what you mean by stationary. Can you please explain?

A2. Our technical resources are a little confused by this question. We are requesting a Direct Acting Stationary Arm so that all the action is in one sequence and mechanics can easily adjust. The pressure die pressure is critical when making tight bends on thin walled material. On a direct acting stationary arm the force exerted by the pressure die is adjusted through a hydraulic pressure reducing valve, easily monitored by the mechanic.

Q3. Neither bender has a swing away wiper die holder but we do have close approach wiper die holders. Is this acceptable?

A3. No. A swing away wiper die allows the Y axis to move forward for the next bend. It eliminates carriage interference. We require the swing away wiper due to the multi-bend configurations we frequently create. Additionally, a close approach wiper die holder appears to require tooling modifications on all existing wiper dies, which is unacceptable.

Q4. What brand of CMM will the bender need to be integrated with?

A4. Stinger MM600
