Technology Applications Group, Inc. (TAG) Guidelines for Used Magnesium Parts Preparation

Prior to TAG TS 29 Anodic Coating

In preparation for sending parts out for TAG TS 29 (Tagnite anodic coating for magnesium) it is critical that components are properly prepared. The TAG TS 29 system was designed around processing new magnesium components and has been in use for over 15 years in the aerospace and defense industry. A number of years ago TAG began applying TAG TS 29 to used magnesium aerospace components with success. However, this success came after learning the importance of properly preparing the used castings. Consequently, used magnesium components need to have a bare magnesium surface, just like new magnesium components.

On the KC-135 program, it is critical that magnesium components arrive in a condition ready for immediate application of TAG TS 29. The following conditions are necessary for proper processing:

• Free of all organic coatings (primer, top coat, varnish etc.)

• Free of loose scale/corrosion product

• Free of pre-existing anodize or old conversion coating

• Media blasted to leave a somewhat brightened surface (critical that grooves, crevices, and other hard to reach areas are not forgotten in the media blasting step, best results have come from the final blasting using an Armex baking soda material).

• Bearing liners and sleeves must be removed, as they cannot be masked

• Some helicoils might have to be removed because it is not possible to mask them. This has been discovered to be the case thus far on two (2) KC-135 components. TAG has not had the opportunity to review all KC-135 components. To acquire quotations for TAG TS 29, contact TAG using the contact information shown on the last page of this document.

NOTE:

Should parts arrive in a condition that does not meet the above requirements, TAG will return the parts for proper preparation.

Example of Poor Parts Preparation - Dull brownish color indicates incomplete media blasting. Yellow areas are primer which was not removed.

Example of Proper Parts Preparation. Uniform bare magnesium surface, somewhat brightened surface, free of primers and top-coat paints

Example of Proper Parts Preparation. Uniform bare magnesium surface, somewhat brightened surface, free of primers and top-coat paints. Note that inside corners, and groves are uniform in appearance. This allows for uniform application of TAG TS 29.
