ALLERGIST

SUMMARY. Examines, diagnoses, performs diagnostic tests, and treats allergic disorders.

1 QUALIFICATIONS.

1.1 Completion of a fellowship in allergy acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF, is mandatory.

1.2 Current board certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology

2 TYPE OF WORK. The duties include but are not limited to the following:

2.1 Examines, diagnoses, and treats allergic diseases.

2.2 Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews.

2.3 Examines patients and determines required x-ray examinations, clinical laboratory tests, and diagnostic challenge tests (dermal on inhalation or ingestion).

2.4 Interprets tests results and evaluates findings.

2.5 Prescribes specific medications, diets, and immunotherapy and injection therapy.

2.6 In emergencies, treats patients suffering from anaphylactic shock, angioedema, urticaria, bronchospasm, and other severe allergic diseases.

2.7 Formulates plans and procedures for allergy services,

2.8 Instructs interns, residents, and fellows in allergy procedures.

ANESTHESIA TECHNICIAN / TECHNOLOGIST

1. QUALIFICATIONS.

1.1 Graduation from an Anesthesia training program approved by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) and Current Certification as a Certified Anesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T.) or as a Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer. A.TT.) through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) and a minimum of one (1) year experience as an anesthesia technician or as a medical technician with operating room and logistic experience within the last three (3) years, -OR-

1.2 Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as an anesthesia technician or as a medical technician with operating room and logistic experience within the last five (5) years, or be a graduate of an ASATT approved two (2) year educational program of study in Anesthesia.

2. TYPE OF WORK. The duties include but are not limited to the following:

2.1 Responsible for pre-operative set up of all anesthesia equipment and supplies in both the Surgical

Suite and Labor and Delivery. Will clean and replace used material as needed.

2.2 Readies operating rooms and appropriate equipment based on the daily schedule.

2.3 Responds to the needs of anesthesia providers during surgery. Replaces malfunctioning equipment. Troubleshoots machine malfunctions. Performs routine cleaning and operator maintenance of all anesthesia machines.

2.4 Keeps Anesthesia Element Chief apprised of malfunctions. Urgently replaces machines and equipment when necessary.

2.5 Cleans and restocks anesthesia machines and equipment carts at the end of the day. Cleans and replaces used equipment.

2.6 Maintains appropriate levels of non-controlled drugs as established by anesthesia providers.

2.7 Checks drug stock levels daily and orders needed items from the pharmacy.

Appropriately identifies and discards outdated drugs by performing checks at least monthly.

ANESTHESIOLOGIST

1. QUALIFICATIONS

1.1 Current board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology or the

American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology.

1.2 CPR, BCLS, and ACLS certification must be obtained through the American Heart Association and/or Red Cross approved training program.

2.1 Provide routine and emergent anesthesia care for neonatal through geriatric patients with American

Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classifications I - VI.

2.2 Provide regional and/or general anesthesia care for the following subspecialties: general surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiothoracic, vascular, adult dentistry, pediatric dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, podiatry, and dermatology.

2.3 Provide resuscitative care during a cardiopulmonary arrest, and sedation or general anesthetic care at remote locations.

2.4 Supervise care and/or supervise the simultaneous delivery of anesthesia care by certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs); administer anesthesia in lieu of CRNA to patients whose condition poses a particular anesthetic difficulty.

2.5 Administer appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.

2.6 Oversee the activities of the recovery room and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy in the recovery room setting.

2.7 Implement the proper use of mechanical ventilators in the recovery room, and as necessary, in the intensive care units.

2.8 Provide consultation regarding preoperative preparation, intra and postoperative anesthetic management, and treatment of chronic pain patients.

2.9 Consult with other members of the MTF medical and nursing staff to provide quality perioperative care.

2.10 Document medical care in accordance with MTF regulations, Air Force Instructions (AFI), and the standards established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

2.11 Provide ongoing anesthesia care until relieved by a qualified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist.

2.12 Attend monthly Anesthesiology Department meetings (or Surgical Services Department meetings in the absence of an Anesthesiology Department), and quarterly MTF Medical/Dental Professional Staff meetings.

AUDIOLOGIST

SUMMARY. Provides care and treatment for human ailments under general supervision and direction of a medical officer. Plans, conducts, and directs research in area of professional practice.

1.1 Possess a master’s degree from a program in Audiology accredited by the Council on Academic

Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).

1.2 Either possess a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech- Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) or certification through the American Board of Audiology.

1.3 Is licensed in one of the fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the US Virgin Islands.

1.4 A minimum of 24 months of experience within the last 36 months.

2.1 Identify, assess, and manage auditory, balance, and other neural systems.

2.2 Use audiometers, computers, and other testing devices to measure the loudness at which a person begins to hear sounds, the ability to distinguish between sounds, and the nature and extent of hearing loss.

2.3 Provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the hearing and balance mechanisms including intraoperative monitoring of the cranial nerves, cerumen removal, cochlear implant assessment and management, posturography, and other advanced balance mechanism evaluations.

2.4 Interview patient and records patient’s case history to determine previous ailments and complaints.

2.5 Perform examinations to determine evidences of physiological or anatomical abnormality.

Supplement examination by arranging laboratory test analyses and diagnostic xrays. Interpret laboratory results in evaluating examination findings.

2.6 May recommend, fit, and dispense personal or large area amplification systems, such as hearing aids and alerting devices.

2.7 Plan, administer, and record progress of prescribed courses of treatment with limits of area of practice.

Accomplish therapeutic procedures after consulting medical officers.

2.8 Refer patient to and consults with physician for further case diagnosis and treatment planning.

2.9 Provide instructions to patients regarding prescribed therapeutic exercises.

2.10 Administer medication upon prescription by physician, with limitations established by the Director of Medical Services.

2.11 Instruct and provide clinical supervision of assistants. Prescribe and supervise instruction in use and maintenance of therapeutic devices, exercises, or procedures. Fit and adjust appliances, and advise patients on care of therapeutic or corrective equipment.

2.12 Participates in special programs. Participates in specialized Air Force health programs such as hearing conservation program, exceptional family members program, aerospace medical program, and occupational health program.

2.13 Measures noise levels in workplaces and conducts hearing protection programs.

BONE DENSITOMETRIST

SUMMARY. Operates equipment to conduct bone densitometry tests and assists radiologist or physician with special procedures. Prepares equipment and patients for diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures. Performs technical and administrative densitometry activities. Ensures health protective measures such as universal precautions and radiation protection measures are established and employed. Assists the radiation oncologist.

1.1 Knowledge. Human anatomy and physiology; medical terminology and ethics; legal aspects of medicine;

healthcare accreditation standards; radiation physics, biology, and protection; basic electronics theory;

techniques of operating x-ray and specialized diagnostic imaging equipment; radiographic positioning;

patient care and monitoring techniques; image recording media and processing techniques; sensitometric and quality control procedures; aseptic and sterile techniques; reactions to contrast media;

cardiopulmonary resuscitation and methods of recording the fluoroscopic image.

1.2 Education. Completion of high school or general education development equivalency with successful completion of courses in algebra, and biology or general science are mandatory. Successful completion of high school or collegiate courses in chemistry and physics is desirable.

1.3 Training. The following training is mandatory:

1.3.1 Completion of an accredited radiologic course.

1.3.2 Experience operating x-ray equipment as well as producing and processing radiographs. Experience performing or supervising functions such as producing radiographs, assisting with fluoroscopy and special radiographic procedures, or treating disease by radiotherapy.

1.3.3 Completion of Certified Operator Training on specific Prodigy/Lunar (GE) Bone

Densitometer equipment.

1.4 Must have and maintain licensure as a Medical Radiologic Technologist.

1.5 Must have four hours of documented radiation safety training within the last twenty-four months.

1.6 At least 12 months of bone densitometry experience within the last 36 months.

2.1 Operates bone densitometry equipment to produce routine diagnostic test results.

Computes techniques and adjusts control panel settings. Performs calibration and maintains documentation of required daily quality assurance of equipment.

2.2 Performs patient check-in process in accordance with local procedures.

2.3 Instructs patients preparing for procedures. Prepares sterile supplies and equipment. Operates accessory equipment such as digital imagers and vital signs monitoring equipment.

2.4 Positions patient to scan desired anatomic structures. Exposes and processes scans and monitors the patient during the procedure.

2.5 Makes adjustments based on the specific examination requirements. Records, processes, and analyzes the scan. Enters and maintains data in radiology information systems.

2.6 Prints scan data and forwards to the physician responsible for reading the study

2.7 Assists physicians with special examinations.

CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LABORATORY TECHNICIAN SUMMARY.

Perform a variety of technical and supportive patient care tasks to assist physicians in performing complex and invasive cardiac catheterization procedures.

1.1 Education. Completion of an accredited Registered Cardiovascular Technician

Certification (RCVT) program.

1.2 Experience. The technician must have a minimum of two years professional Cardiac Catheterization experience. The technician must have worked full time or part time (greater than 20hrs/week) as a professional Cardiac Catheterization technician for at least 12 months in the last 24 months.

2.1 The technician shall be required to perform Cardiac Catheterization services including the following:

2.1.1 Provide clinical assistance in the cardiac catheterization lab.

2.1.2 Set up the lab for procedures.

2.1.3 Assist the cardiologist during procedures.

2.1.4 Provide assistance in other cardiopulmonary service areas at the discretion of the Cardiology Element Chief.

2.1.5 Educate and train new cardiac catheterization lab technicians.

2.1.6 Maintain cardiac catheterization lab supplies.

2.1.7 Assist with ordering and maintaining supplies for the cardio service.

2.1.8 Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.

2.1.9 Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.

2.2 Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.

2.3 Provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.

2.4 Prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include, but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient health record.

CARDIAC SURGICAL TECHNICIAN

1.1 Education. The technician shall have a high school degree and be a graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent. At a minimum, the technician must have a current specialty area certificate from an accredited national, state or military trained equivalent school.

1.2 Certification. Certified as a Surgical Services Technologists

1.3 Experience. At least three years of experience as a surgical technician for cardiac surgical procedures.

2.1 Set up all surgical instruments, sutures, saws, and cannulas.

2.2 Assist surgeon while opening chest, cannulating and harvesting conduits in the surgical technician.

2.3 Educate and train new cardiac surgical technicians.

2.4 Maintain cardiac and thoracic surgical supplies.

2.5 Assist with ordering and maintaining surgical supplies for the cardiothoracic service.

2.6 Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.

Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.

2.7 Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.

2.8 Provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and

CARDIOPULMONARY LAB TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY: Performs cardiopulmonary laboratory functions and activities for noninvasive diagnostic cardiac procedures, invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, pulmonary function testing, diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies, and respiratory therapy.

1.1 Knowledge. Must be knowledgeable of general anatomy and physiology; cardiopulmonary system structures and functions; basic pharmacology; patient care theory, procedures, and techniques; medical terminology; aseptic techniques; medical ethics; resuscitation techniques; maintaining and operating cardiopulmonary laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic equipment; medications, and medical computer systems.

1.2 An accredited cardiopulmonary laboratory specialist course.

1.3 Experience. Experience performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to care for and treat cardiopulmonary laboratory patients.

1.4 At least 12 months of experience within the last 18 months.

2.1 Performs cardiopulmonary functions such as electrocardiograms, exercise stress testing, and ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring.

2.2 Assesses heart structures and flows via 2-D and m-mode echocardiography, Doppler, and contrast colors.

2.3 Assists physician with transesophageal and stress echocardiography, and radionuclide and thallium studies.

2.4 Interprets arrhythmias.

2.5 Serves on cardiac catheterization (invasive) procedures teams.

2.6 Assists in placing specialized equipment and instruments into cardiovascular system for diagnosis and therapy, including cardiac pacemaker and balloon pump insertion.

2.7 Operates and maintains specialized equipment to evaluate respiratory or pulmonary functions, and respiratory physiology.

2.8 Performs spirometry, flow volume loops, lung volumes, diffusion capacities, and closing volumes.

2.9 Draws and analyzes arterial blood gas samples. Maintains quality control of arterial blood gas machines and CO oximeters, including proficiency testing.

2.10 Performs broncho-provovation and exercise testing. Assists physician with fiberoptic bronchoscopy for diagnosis and therapy.

2.11 Under orders of a physician, administers respiratory care such as oxygen and aerosol therapy, mechanical ventilator management, and preparation and administration of respiratory medications.

2.12 Assists physician with intubation and extubation procedures. Performs endotracheal tube care. Maintains patient airway. Ensures bronchial hygiene through incentive spirometry and specialized breathing instructions.

2.13 Prepares and instructs patient to use equipment or perform procedure. Checks patient and equipment, and changes equipment. Monitors data display on physiological equipment, and obtains and records vital signs.

2.14 Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Assesses and documents patient status. Performs user maintenance on equipment.

2.15 Adheres to infection control and universal precautions procedures, including disposition of contaminated materials. Practices safety and security measures.

2.16 Performs cardiopulmonary laboratory administrative, maintenance, and support functions. Ensures equipment is calibrated to manufacturer's specifications. Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes (or prepares for sterilization) cardiopulmonary equipment. Operationally checks and inspects equipment.

2.17 Determines inventory level of disposable supplies; stocks accordingly; and returns excess stock.

Prepares equipment requisitions. Maintains CPR cart. Ensures emergency equipment is available and functional.

2.18 Schedules patients for evaluations, procedures, and treatments. Obtains medical records.

2.19 Greets patients and answers telephone.

2.20 Assists with transportation of patients to and from hospitals, and those in the air evacuation system requiring mechanical ventilation.

2.21 Maintains general correspondence, files, records, and reports. Provides biometric data.

CERTIFIED MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (ASSISTANT) - INPATIENT SUMMARY:

Provides routine patient care and treatment to beneficiaries. Organizes the medical environment and performs and directs support activities for inpatient care settings.

1.1 Must have knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; nursing theory, techniques and procedures; team nursing; patient needs; emergency medical treatment to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, aseptic technique, medical ethics, and legal aspects; prescription drugs and their administration; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment, military hygiene and sanitation; risk management, contingency operations, disaster preparedness, and chemical warfare; and transportation of sick and wounded. Vaccination procedures; methods of properly administering intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections; pollen counting; allergen identification; composition of various vaccines;

mechanisms of anaphylaxis and shock and their treatment; and pharmacology of various drug groups.

1.2 Education. Completion of high school with courses in general science, biology, psychology, and chemistry is mandatory.

1.3 Completion of a formal program in medical assisting recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES); or certified through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA); or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) for Registered

Medical Assistants (RMA); or equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience (i.e., military training).

1.4 Experience. Must have at least 12 months of experience within the last 36 months performing nursing activities in the care and treatment of inpatients; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment; and assisting in medical treatment of patients.

2.1 Serves as a medical assistant as part of a nursing team performing patient care and nursing administrative duties for inpatients in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Provides patient care for beneficiaries as part of a nursing team by utilizing the nursing process.

SUMMARY: Plans, provides, and evaluates routine patient care and treatment of beneficiaries. Organizes the medical environment, performs and directs support activities in patient care situations.

1.1 Must has a knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; nursing theory, techniques and procedures; team nursing; patient needs; emergency medical treatment to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, aseptic technique, medical ethics, and legal aspects; prescribed drugs and their administration; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment, risk management, disaster preparedness, and transportation of sick and wounded; vaccination procedures; methods of properly administering intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections; composition of various vaccines; and pharmacology of various drug groups; computer operations in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.

1.2 Education. Completion of high school with courses in general science, biology, psychology, and chemistry.

1.3 Completion of a medical assisting program recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES); or certified through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA); or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) for Registered Medical Assistants (RMA); or equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience (i.e., military training).

1.4 Experience. Experience performing functions such as care and treatment of patients; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment; properly administering oral and parenteral medications; care and treatment of patients; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment; conducting subprofessional portions of physical examinations; or assisting in medical treatment of patients.

1.5 Have at least 12 months of medical assistant experience within the last 36 months.

CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST (CRNA)

1.1 Shall be a graduate from an accredited baccalaureate degree program in nursing (BSN) acceptable to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General.

1.2 Have and maintain a current license to practice nursing as a registered nurse in a US jurisdiction.

1.3 Must have a Master’s degree from an accredited program in nurse anesthesia

1.4 Must complete a course in nurse anesthesia acceptable to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General.

1.5 Shall hold current certification from an approved national CRNA certifying body (Council on

Certification of Nurse Anesthetists). Shall maintain certification and be recertified every 2 years by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.

1.6 Have and maintain current certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

1.7 Have experience in the delivery of and monitoring of all types of anesthesia utilized in the delivery of obstetrical anesthesia (general endotracheal, subarachnoid block and epidural).

1.8 Have at least 12 months within the last 24 months providing epidural analgesia (labor epidurals).

2.1 Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations as privileged by the credentials committee.

2.2 Advise appropriate anesthesiologist of adverse reactions necessitating non-delegated medical decisions;

take appropriate actions as directed or required.

2.3 Assist with the training of other staff personnel to include in venipuncture and intravenous therapy, respiratory care, and anesthesia.

2.4 Indicate responsibility for the contents and accuracy of all prepared reports/forms by affixing his/her own signature to the documents after validation.

2.5 Attend and participate in professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities.

2.6 Department quality improvement activities as assigned by the department chief may include, but not limited to:

2.7 Non-clinical duties will include, but is not limited to:

CLINICAL GENETICIST

SUMMARY. Evaluates, examines, diagnoses and treats genetic diseases and conditions.

1.1 Board certification or active candidacy for board certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics in Clinical Genetics.

1.2 Experience. Completion of a residency or fellowship in medical genetics acceptable to the Surgeon

General, HQ USAF, is mandatory.

2.1 Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats genetic diseases.

2.2 Prepares and reviews case histories and clinical records.

2.3 Interviews patients or parents to obtain clinical and family histories and constructs pedigrees.

2.4 Examines patients, determines need for laboratory or other testing, and interprets pedigrees, examination findings and test results.

2.5 Counsels patients or parents on recurrence risks and availability of prenatal diagnosis.

2.6 Advises on type and quantity of supplies and equipment.

2.7 Coordinates medical genetics services with other medical activities.

2.8 Instructs interns and residents in methods and procedures for diagnosis and management of genetic disorders.

CLINICAL NURSE – ADULT CRITICAL AND INTENSIVE CARE

1 QUALIFICATIONS

1.1 Have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) by the American Heart Association. In addition to BCLS, certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required for the Critical Care Unit.

1.2 Must have graduated from a critical care training course or completion of an equitable platform (i.e., Essentials of Critical Care Orientation [ECCO], online course from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses).

1.3 Must have completed an adult trauma training course (i.e., Trauma Nurse Core

Course [TNCC], or Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses [ATCN]).

1.4 Minimum of two years experience with at least one year in a critical care area of four or more beds.

One year of experience must have occurred within the last 24 months.

2.1 Knowledge of interpersonal relationships and the ability to maintain composure and react appropriately while relating to patients, families, physicians, coworkers and ancillary staff; manage distraught, irritable, unreasonable or angry individuals;

and, maintain positive rapport with all individuals involved in patient care.

2.2 Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders and conditions as appropriate and seen in critically ill patients (e.g., Ventilator Associated pneumonia and the VAP bundle, Sepsis, and ARDS).

2.3 Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of critically ill patients. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development, and pathophysiology of disease processes specific to the critical care unit population to include all ages from adult to geriatrics.

2.4 Assess patients' conditions for potential or life-threatening crises. Distinguish between normal and abnormal physical findings (from physical assessment and vital sign assessment). Plan appropriate nursing care. Notify physician if needed and carry out appropriate interventions as ordered.

2.5 Identify impending or existing emotional or psychiatric crisis and provide appropriate intervention.

2.6 Ability to react with alertness and skill in any emergency situation, (e.g., cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, shock, severe physical trauma and psychiatric reaction). Serves as member of the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and Code Blue resuscitation/response team.

2.7 Reassess patient's condition and revise plan of care based on identified nursing problems.

2.8 Assess patient/family knowledge level, implement plan of instructions and record patient/family demonstrated level of understanding.

2.9 Implement the Nursing process (assessment, planning, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation) to include holistic approach.

2.10 Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. 2.11 Obtain patient history, pertinent family history, and document in patient’s medical record.

(LPN's/paraprofessionals).

2.13 Transcribe or verify transcription of physician orders.

2.14 Carry out prescribed physician orders and document in patient medical record.

2.15 Communicate pertinent patient data to charge nurse and/or physician as appropriate.

2.16 Reassess patient's condition and revise plan of care based on identified nursing problems.

2.17 Possess knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in treatment of critically ill patients, the desired effects, side effects, complications and usual dosage of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required.

2.18 Administer prescribed critical care medications to include multiple critical care medication drips and intravenous push drugs (e.g., sedatives, narcotics, vasoactive medications, neuromuscular blockades, antidysrythmics, antihypertensives, thrombolytics, and emergency drugs). Administration consideration based on protocols, policy and recommendations by medical references.

2.19 Assess and document patient response to medications administered and intervene if desired response is not achieved.

2.20 Instruct patient/family regarding prescribed medications/therapies and surgical/diagnostic procedures that must be accomplished.

2.21 Administer inhalation therapy treatments, with knowledge of medications utilized in this treatment and reactions.

2.22 Properly apply cardiac monitor leads and 12 lead EKG machine, analyze rhythm strips and notify Physician of any abnormal results (e.g., dysrhythmias for patient situation). Be able to interpret cardiac rhythms and their implications, intervene on emergent changes.

2.23 Assess patient/family knowledge level, implement plan of instructions and record patient/family demonstrated level of understanding.

2.24 Care for patients with a variety of hemodynamic monitors to include pressure lines/transducers, Swan- Ganz catheters, and arterial lines. Obtain hemodynamic parameters and interpret results. Notify physician of any parameters outside of expected results.

2.25 Participate in Discharge Planning as appropriate.

2.26 Demonstrate use and operation of defibrillator to include emergency defibrillator.

2.27 Obtain Arterial Blood Gas via arterial puncture or drawing from arterial line.

Interpret results, notify physician of abnormal results and anticipate intervention as appropriate.

2.28 Perform the Postoperative Recovery and discharge within established criteria.

2.29 Draw blood from invasive monitoring lines, lab value interpretation and intervene as appropriate (follow hospital protocols when applicable and/or notify physician).

2.30 Care of patients on ventilators to include knowledge of the modes of ventilation, Ventilator

Associated Pneumonia Bundle.

2.31 Be able to initiate life saving measures in the absence of a physician.

2.32 Operate infusion pumps, enteral feeding pumps, and Patient Controlled Analgesia pumps, epidural pumps, electronic thermometers, and wound vacs.

2.33 Administration of Blood products.

CLINICAL NURSE - EMERGENCY ROOM

1 QUALIFICATIONS

1.1 Have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) by the American Heart Association. In addition to BCLS, certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required for the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Room. Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is required of RNs working in the Newborn Nursery and Labor and Delivery. Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required of RNs working in Emergency Room, Critical Care Unit, and the Pediatric Ward.

1.2 Certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Emergency Nurses Association

(ENA), Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) or Course in Advance Trauma Nursing – Injury and Illness (CATN-II).

1.3 Minimum of two years experience with at least one year in an emergency room.

One year of experience must have occurred within the last three years.

2.1 Provides emergency nursing care for emergent (Level 1), urgent (Level 2), non- urgent (Level 3, 4, 5) patients coming to the Emergency Department.

2.2 Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for all patients including newborns, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly; disabled to include visually and hearing impaired; and individuals of varying ethnic and religious backgrounds to include those who do not speak or understand English.

2.3 Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required.

2.4 Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.

2.5 Assumes full responsibility for assigned patients and ancillary personnel. Delegates tasks, directs emergency room technicians, specialty technicians, and provides counseling, guidance, and patient education.

2.6 Recognizes medical emergencies and responds appropriately. Initiates CPR if required. Assists medical team in administering advanced cardiac life support measures when necessary.

2.7 Participates in the orientation and training of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.

2.8 Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.

2.9 Ability to synthesize data from a variety of sources and make appropriate clinical decisions.

2.10 Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness

2.11 Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.

2.12 Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level utilizing the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.

2.13 Assesses patients.

2.14 Establishes and maintains good interpersonal relationships with co-workers, families, peers, and other health team members.

2.15 Will be oriented/trained on the use of all equipment available for patient care. Skill in setting up, operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.

Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. 2.17 Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.

2.18 Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines.

2.19 Contributes to professional environment using appropriate leadership skills.

2.20 May be required to work various shifts or augment clinical nursing support during the absence of other team nurses due to illness, leave or deployment,

2.21 Encourages team building and enhances work knowledge by cross-training/augmenting other units as appropriate.

1.3 Knowledge of preventive health schedules, procedures, processes and education methods.

1.4 Knowledge of disease management and population health principles.

1.5 Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.

1.7 The nurse shall have at least 24 months of experience within the last 48 months in a primary care clinic setting.
