Ultem 9085 resin)

The Fortus 450mc, manufactured by Stratasys, is the Air Force's sole qualified polymer 3D printer machine in additive manufacturing (AM) for the United States Air Force (USAF) community approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Air Force Advanced Technology and Training Center (AFATTC). It is the sole equipment that meets the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) requirements (toxicity, flammability, smoke and tensile test requirements) for the manufacture of specific plastic parts used on any USAF weapons/air systems. Stratasys, or any approved/qualified Stratasys vendor, is the only provider for the Fortus 450mc, with suitable material for three dimensional polymer manufacturing. In accordance with Airworthiness Circular 18-04 (AC-18-04) issued by Mr.

Thomas M. Fischer, USAF Technical Airworthiness Authority, dated 16 November 2018, the resin Ultem 9085 was acceptable for use on all USAF air systems for aircraft interior finishes, components, and equipment applications. No other company besides Stratasys is compatible with the mandatory material, Ultem 9085 resin, to deliver the required specifications – or equivalent – for FAA approved additive manufacturing technology on USAF weapons/air systems.

Stratasys also provides the necessary support to properly utilize the equipment to manufacture successful products. It is the only AM polymer material approved for aerospace applications meeting flame, smoke, and toxicity (FST) ratings required by FAA/USAF. Certified spools of Ultem 9085 must be obtained for aerospace part production; only Stratasys or their approved/qualified vendors can support this requirement. Ultem 9085 is only compatible with Fortus 450mc.

Currently, the Stratasys Fortus 450mc 3D Printers are the sole polymer machines that the Air Force has qualified.

A Sources Sought (FA524019S0011) was posted on FedBizOpps (FBO) on 13 August for 10 days. There were two interested vendors, but neither could provide a product that meets the specifications requirements/ratings of both the FAA and USAF. The specifications were revised and another Sources Sought (FA524019S0012) was posted on FBO on 6 September 2019 for 3 days. Again, there were two interested vendors, but neither could provide a product that meets the specifications requirements/ratings of both the FAA and USAF.

At this time, Stratasys, or an approved/qualified Stratasys vendor, is the only suitable source capable of providing aviation-unique equipment and services required to pursue AM in the USAF in accordance with AC-18-04 or USAF Drawing 201879200_Rev B.
