Position Description for Protestant Religious Education Director

1.0. Description of Service: The purpose of this document is to outline the requirements the Holloman Air Force Base Protestant Religious Education Director.

2.0. DoD Qualifying Security Clearance: All individuals actively fulfilling requirements under the Holloman AFB Chapel Religious Services contract must submit to an Installation Background Check. In accordance with Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI 1402.5, para 1.e.5.) individuals will need to complete and submit a National Agency Check and Inquiries form (SFI71 and SF-87).

3.0. General Requirements include:

3.1. Bachelor’s degree or higher. Documented evidence of the following is an acceptable substitute: five years experience in management OR five years experience in church administration, which can include volunteer service.

3.2. Must be experienced in working with MS Office Programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Applicant must adhere to computer security requirements and usage. Applicant must comply with copyright license reporting and copyright license identification procedures.

3.3. Ability to effectively manage and coordinate activities and facilitate communication between the chapel community and other base organizations.

3.4. Online Information Assurance Awareness Training is required for Government computer access and Total Force Awareness is a requirement for all on-base personnel. A Common Access Card may be issued to allow government computer, internet, and e-mail access to fulfill contracted service requirements.

3.5. Be able to read and speak English fluently, and provide positive customer service in an interfaith pluralistic environment.

4.0. General Responsibilities include:

4.1. Provide all chapel staff and community with 30-day advance notice of activities for publication and community awareness. Must be able to attend weekly HC staff meetings (if required), unless prior notice is given and provide appropriate designee.

4.2. Recruit/train volunteer teachers via workshops and meetings as required. Train RE staff on proper protocols to utilize facilities, RE policies, and resources. Report to faith group chaplain or designee concerning the attendance no later than Tuesday.

4.3. Ensure core leadership team of teachers and volunteers youth workers have submitted the appropriate security clearance and background check required in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

4.4. Organize two volunteer training events, one in the fall and another in the spring.

Programs must be in accordance with Holloman Chapel Operating Instructions and AF 52-series Instructions.

4.5. Must be available to attend annual local and regional educational workshops as necessary and directed by the faith group chaplain when funding is available.

4.6. Ensure DoD safety requirements are followed and ensure proper adult/children ratio is maintained for all programs.

4.7. Develop and submit a yearly Religious Education planning calendar and keep it updated. Ensure implementation of special Adult and Sacramental Education programs.

4.8. Research and obtain Religious Education material to support the RE program and obtaining Wing Chaplain or designee approval before purchasing (specifically religious literature).

4.9. Ensure Facility Request Form is completed at least 30 days in advance for all programs and activities. Indicate on form all necessary Chaplain Assistant and equipment support and coordinate assistance with Chapel NCOIC.

4.10. Maintain Continuity, Finances, & Parish Group records. Desk, computer and basic admin supplies are provided by the chapel.

4.11. Submit all pertinent data from special events/programs and submit to the faith group chaplain for after-action reports as required.

4.12. Attend monthly Parish Advisory Council and meet quarterly with the faith group chaplain.

4.13. Generate all publicity for the RE program: RE announcements, flyers, bulletin inserts, Events Guide and calendar. Must obtain approval from the Wing Chaplain before distributing.

4.14. Work collaboratively with chapel staff to provide Vacation Bible School, Back to School Bash, Christmas Program, Tree lighting ceremony, and the end of year Teacher Appreciation and other programs authorized by the faith group chaplain.

4.15. Ensure welcome orientation letter to new visitors/members of the programs.

5.0. Specific Responsibilities:

5.1. Provide at least 15 hours per week service during duty hours (including Sundays) as coordinated with the faith group chaplain.

5.2. Present/ensure any Religious Education Program PowerPoint slides and announcements are given to the faith group chaplain or designee by Thursday morning of each week for advertising at the weekly worship service.

5.3. Oversees RE programs and all weekly studies including: couples, singles, single parent, men, women, young adult, youth and children groups of the chapel.

5.4. Arrive at chapel for the beginning of classes no later than 30 minutes prior to the event or as coordinated with the faith group chaplain and stay until all classes have ended and clean the facility.

5.5. Each Sunday oversee/visit/provide Sunday school classes, Children’s Church, and Wee Church (if Wee Church is not already provided or requested by the faith group chaplain).

5.6. Develop/maintain a data base roster of all Bible Study teachers, and volunteers.

5.7. Assist chaplains and laity in ordering goods and services in support of the Protestant RE programs.

5.8. Estimated hours for Protestant Religious Education Director is 15 hours per week [Sunday Service (2.5 hrs), Monday - Friday Planning hours (10 hrs), First Wednesday of the Month Staff Meeting (2 hrs), PAC meeting 1 time per month (1.5 hrs)]
