Attachment 1 Executive Summary Acquisition Package for VMware Software Maintenance and Support Driven by the OMB’s 25-point plan to reform federal information technology management, FMCSA has established its Private Cloud computing system, or Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform.
Infrastructure as a Service is defined by the National Institutes of Standards and Technology, NIST, as “the provision of processing, storage, networking and other fundamental computing resources” for the deployment of servers and systems to business owners, reducing the costs associated with individual hardware purchases.
The solution gives FMCSA a simple way to procure, organize, deploy and implement its virtual infrastructure (servers, storage, network, rack, cabling, management software, and deployment services.) This enables immediate realization and maximizing of the benefits of virtualization without an overly complex process.
The solution is also designed so that there is no single point of failure and redundancy is incorporated into all mission critical components of the solution. Management applications are not designed with this level of redundancy because the mission critical workloads will continue to operate in the event of a management application failure. This provides the assurance that FMCSA systems will continue to function with a greater than 95% uptime.
This procurement is for renewal licensing and maintenance support for the VMware vCloud Hypervisor systems currently in hosting the private cloud infrastructure. This will allow FMCSA to continue to receive patches and enterprise support where needed.
