STATEMENT OF WORK:
New Theater Seating for Canyon Rim Visitor Center New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
Background:
The theater in Canyon Rim Visitor Center is used daily to show visitors the park film. It has not been improved on since the original installation in 1991. The existing seating is worn and stained with several seats broken. Last year we replaced the AV equipment with a new system, and we are now trying to update the rest of the theater. With the redesignation of the park to a National Park (previously a National River), we have seen a huge increase in visitation. For most of the year the theater is being utilized by about 300 or more people per day, with the film showing every half hour. This project will provide new theater seating to update the theater and make it more functional. When the new AV system was installed, it extended the screen out by over a foot, making the front row of seats too close to the screen. New seating will be pushed back farther to allow better viewing from the front row. Also, the original seating is tight. New seating will include wider seats to provide for a more comfortable experience and to accommodate all sizes of visitors.
The park is nearing the end of a complete exhibit overhaul for the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, with new exhibits being installed in December 2023. This project will compliment the exhibit project by updating the theater to match the overall visitor center updates.
