Beam Position Monitor System

Proposal No. CR-310212

AMENDMENT No. 1

ATTACHMENT A – Changes and/or Clarifications

October 9, 2020

The attention of the vendors is called to the changes and/or clarifications to the original contract and shall be considered when preparing and submitting your proposal.

Vendor Question 1:

I have a technical question about the of BPM pickup type. In the documentation there is specified “Quadrupole Magnet Coil Length”. Does this mean that you are asking for such a BPM type, sitting inside the Quadrupole or can this be a standard button type pickup?

FRA Answer:

As for the type of BPM, we're leaving this up to the vendor, only adding the constraint that if it does need to be a stripline (as we suspect), it should be able to nest with our quadrupoles (which is why the quadrupole magnet coil length is provided. A drawing of the quadrupole magnet is attached.

Vendor Question 2:

When should the system be delivered? And when is the request delivery date?

FRA Answer:

Ideally, we'd like to have the BPM system in hand ahead of our next shutdown so that it can be installed. This is expected to be in March of 2021, so a requested delivery date of March 1 would probably be good.

Vendor Question 3:

Amount of BPMs to be provided: 5. Each BPM shall provide 7 arrays: 4 channels, 2 positions and intensity)

FRA Answer:

The quantities of BPMs, and the data that we expect back from them are correct as stated.

Anything more (e.g., channel attenuation) will depend on the solutions provided.

Vendor Question 4:

In the RFQ not only the BPM electronic is required, also the pickups. Could you provide us more information about them? Geometry, interfaces, cables, bellows... There is Quadrupole Magnet Coil Length defined, but there should be a special type of pickup between the quadripole? We have some companies who could provide us with pickups, we are more focused on the electronic part. For this reason we will need to have all the possible information related to the pickup.

FRA Answer:

The chamber and BPM pickup design choice is up to the bidders. We have no specific design, but it needs to be a stripline, which we would need to nest in our quadrupoles due to space constraints. The quarupole drawing is included in Addendum 1.

Vendor Question 5:

Electronics response time (<0.20 ns (50Mhz)): Is it a typo error? 50MHz = 20ns. Even so, for us it is not clear what is the meaning of this feature. Could you explain to us what you mean?

FRA Answer:

This is a typo and we meant the 50 MHz. This may over-specify the feature described in your next bullet point (question) for BPM Frontend/Data Interface. We will typically be running 325 MHz pulse trains on the order of 1 us, but may attempt to run pulse trains of as short as 20 ns and would like the resolution to monitor this.

Vendor Question 6:

BPM Frontend/Data interface: "While bunch-by-bunch is not necessary, we would like to track progression of the beam pulse through the length of the pulse in < 0.1 us resolution (thirty-three 325 MHz bunches averaged or better)." Does the system need to average between 33 pulses? Or does the system need to sample 33 times in each pulse even when the minimum pulse length is 100ns?

FRA Answer:

Whether the bidder wants to take individual samples though the 325 MHz pulse train or average them is up to the bidder for their solution. Either is fine with us as long as it yields the resolution desired, both in terms of position and time.
