About this file
The document is a Statement of Work (SOW) dated May 21, 2025, for a project focused on developing non-destructive technology to detect larval infestation in fruits. The USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA/ARS/SHRS) in Miami, FL seeks a portable odor and chemical monitoring system with specific technical requirements, including a lightweight (≤8 lb) device with multiple sensors capable of detecting and differentiating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations (0.1 to 100 ppm).
The required system includes a Windows 11 laptop with pre-installed analysis software, networking capabilities (HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet), wireless keyboard and mouse, an internal pump with field-replaceable air filters, online training, and a two-year extended warranty. The device must be capable of continuous sampling and data logging, with sensors that can detect a wide range of chemicals including alcohols, hydrocarbons, ketones, aldehydes, amines, sulfides, and aromatics. The system will be used to help diagnose new insect invasions in subtropical horticultural environments of South Florida, with delivery specified to the USDA/ARS/SHRS in Miami, FL.

Statement of Work (SOW)
Project: Using non-destructive technology to discern between infested and non-infested fruits
1. IntroducƟon
Developing non-destrucƟve methods for the detecƟon of larval infestaƟon of host fruits in domesƟc fields and at US ports of entry is criƟcal for suitable agriculture. Early detecƟon of infestaƟon in fruits facilitates the control of invasive insects and expedites post-harvest management protocols. Therefore, more sensiƟve, high-throughput screening methods are needed for making informed decisions and implemenƟng control measurements.
Electronic nose (eNose) sensing technologies have been widely used for detecƟng volaƟle organic compounds (VOCs) emiƩed by insects as well as by infested fruits and plants.
AnalyƟcal instruments such as gas chromatography flame-ionizaƟon-detector (GC-FID), and GC coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are standard for the detecƟon of VOCs due to their high accuracy, selecƟvity, and reliability, yet they are costly and usually require a permanent placement. Portable eNose devices can detect VOCs by paƩern recogniƟon and some are able to compare against memorized data in their library, thus idenƟfying the chemicals that signal infested fruit. As such, purchasing a sensiƟve e-nose device capable of detecƟng and differenƟaƟng VOCs possessing similar chemical structure and composiƟon from a mix at low concentraƟons would be of great help in diagnosing new insect invasions into the subtropical horƟcultural environments of South Florida.
2. Scope: The Contractor shall provide the portable device and related items as described.
